Past iSchool Student Groups

ArTex: Artex was founded in March 2007 by Karen Holt and Katie Pierce and other students interested in art and architecture libraries and archives. Past Artex events included: B-scene at the Blanton Museum of Art, tours of the Alexander Architectural Archive, the Texas Memorial Museum, and the Architecture and Planning Library, plus a brown bag lunch with Beth Dodd, Curator of the Alexander Architectural Archive. Artex has also recently begun sponsoring the Edible Book Festival, held each spring. We look forward to meeting iSchoolers and hearing about their interests and ideas. Artex hopes to take advantage of all of the opportunities Austin has to offer for all of those interested in cultural events and visual collections.

American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T): The UT Austin student chapter of ASIST seeks to promote the professional and academic development of all UT students working in the fields of information science. We sponsor lectures, panel discussions and networking opportunities with practitioners in the field. We also provide various resources, career advice and much more. We are currently focusing on areas such as information architecture, user-centered design, and usability.

The Cultural Heritage & Information Preservation Society (CHIPS): Formed at the end of Fall 2009, CHIPS has two purposes: to emphasize UT’s leadership in the area of cultural heritage preservation studies, and to develop extracurricular events that promote cultural heritage preservation research and activities. CHIPS is the first student group to actively bring together talented individuals from across UT to share and collaborate on a diversity of preservation-related topics. At present, members include other iSchool graduate students and School of Architecture students. CHIPS aims to attract an even broader spectrum of members from a variety of academic disciplines in the upcoming years.

iSchool You: iSchool You is a student-run podcast at UT’s School of Information. Podcast episodes provide outreach and publicize the mission, goals, and events happening at the iSchool, as well as act as a collaborative and educational forum for issues in information studies.

Special Library Association (SLA): Our aim is to serve those interested in special libraries and provide information and opportunities available through them. The category of special libraries is broad and encompassing. A special library is any library that serves a focused user population. Special libraries include corporate libraries, medical libraries, law or legal libraries, and some libraries at academic institutions. We provide opportunities to see what special libraries are through some tours of institutions located in the greater Austin area. We also provide opportunities to network with active SLA professionals through periodic social events.
