We advise that before you contact a professor or graduate student to work in their lab that you review their recent publications (below) in order to get a good understanding of what is actually done in lab. The most informative parts here would be the abstract which gives a general overview of the project, and the methods section which describes what actual processes you would do in lab.
In addition, professors typically would prefer that you contact their graduate students directly for open lab positions. Rather than emailing the professor, go to the professor’s lab webpage (usually easy to find if you just search “[Last Name] Lab”) and browse around find the “people” tab which usually will have a list of graduate and undergraduate students who are active in that lab. If their emails are not listed, look them up in the UT Directory.
