Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most.
I was once able to observe an umbilical hernia repair. The procedure was relatively straightforward, and the surgeon was done with the operation in less than an hour. Upon finishing, the surgeon took the time to explain the entire procedure to me by drawing a schematic of the operation on the (no longer) sterile drapes. Then, he invited me to follow him into the waiting room, where he informed the patient’s family that the operation was a success. In doing so, he provided a quick summary of the procedure to the family members so they would be informed and able to deal with any post-operational symptoms or discomfort. Most importantly, despite having explained the procedure to me in great detail only a few minutes ago, the surgeon was able to tailor the delivery of his message so the family members would understand. Although the surgery was interesting to watch, the actions and teaching abilities of this surgeon continue to resonate with me, even today. I aspire to be a physician that exudes a passion for teaching and educating patients of all backgrounds.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?
I originally wanted to go to graduate school so I could go into academia and teach. However, after observing the importance of teaching in the role of a physician and witnessing the meaningful relationships that physicians are able to create with their patients, I decided to go into medicine and channel my love for teaching within the context of healthcare.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?
The people. HCMP is a small, close-knit organization of students from various, diverse backgrounds. It’s great getting to know everybody and being able to learn from each other – there’s never a dull moment!

What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy playing the piano and ukulele, being active, and learning about cars. I also enjoy driving long distances for fun – it’s soothing! (If you ever want a ride anywhere, let me know)
