Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most.

I had the pleasure of waking up at 4 AM in the morning to observe Dr. Goldberg in the OR. The first patient underwent a Manipulation Under Anesthesia, where the doctor essentially stretched and compressed the knee joint until it regained its full range of motion. The sound of the bones cracking and snapping was a little unsettling. Next, I got to observe a knee arthroscopy where the doctor inserted a small probe into the patient’s knee. The goal was to treat a meniscus tear by partially removing the tear. Lastly, I got to observe an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery, where the doctor installed a metal plate onto the patient’s broken ankle. The most important thing I learned during my time in the operating room was the “flow” of the surgeries. It was a wonderful experience to see so many medical professionals working together with such synergy. Everyone worked so meticulously yet efficiently.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

Before interning at HCMP, I wasn’t quite sure what doctors did from day to day, or even if I wanted to become a physician. My misguided impressions of the profession were from episodes of House and Scrubs. However, after shadowing doctors from almost every specialty and scrubbing in on multiple surgical cases, I truly understand the reality of the decisions that they must make. These experiences have influenced me to steer away from engineering and solidified my interest in medicine.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

I love going out on Brown Bags and hanging out with other fellow members of HCMP. It’s always interesting to learn about what drives other people and their aspirations in life. Everyone in the organization is highly motivated and wishes for each other’s success. I don’t think you’ll find this level of energy anywhere else.

What do you like to do in your free time?

What is free time? I enjoy weightlifting and watching my diet by meticulously counting calories. Shoutout to MyFitnessPal. I cannot survive without you.
