Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most.

When I was shadowing Pediatric ER, we came across a case where a mother dropped her two month old baby, who had a head contusion. They had been at the airport, and after rigorous handling by the TSA, the mother had forgotten to buckle the child into the baby carrier, and the baby fell onto the hard floor. When we walked into the room, both the mom and the baby were crying. She said she felt like a failure as a mother, and my heart broke for her. The doctor was very empathetic, mentioning past cases and even her own personal accidents with her children, and I saw firsthand the effect doctors can have on their patients or patient’s family. Life isn’t perfect, not even the for seemingly well put-together adults, and it’s important to have people to connect with and support you during the bad times.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has benefited both my professional goal of becoming a physician and my individual goal of meeting more pre-med students. Shadowing all the doctors in different rotations has been an amazing experience, and I have a much more realistic view of my future. It’s also been fantastic to meet such a fun and diverse group of pre-med students. I’m really excited for my future now, and I might even work with some of the HCMP members in a professional setting someday.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

My favorite aspect of HCMP is learning what goes on behind the scenes. I had no idea how much work is put into determining the upcoming wave of interns, and I really enjoyed working with the other members to sort through applications, interview potential members, and deciding on the next HCMP class.

What do you like to do in your free time?
