Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most.

One of my favorite shadowing experiences was observing a neurosurgeon remove a pituitary tumor. Surprisingly, the entire operation occurred through the patient’s nostril. Using an endoscope, the neurosurgeon removed a fragment from the base of the skull. Then, he carefully extracted the tumor without damaging the pituitary gland. Although watching the surgery was a fantastic experience, what I really value was being able to talk to the neurosurgeon afterwards. When I asked him about his favorite operation to perform, he said it was the one that helped the patient the most. His mentality towards patient care was inspiring and overall this was an experience I will never forget.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has exposed me to so many different perspectives and motives as to why each doctor chose their specialty. Many doctors have talked to me about the pros and cons of life as a physician. As a result, my goals are more defined and I know more of what to expect in the future.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

I love the variety of physicians we are exposed to as well as the flexibility to schedule our own shadowing hours each week. Another perk is being surrounded by like-minded individuals with similar goals. I have learned just as much from members inside the organization as doctors from shadowing.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy hanging out with friends, family and singing.
