Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most.

I shadowed a radiologist who broke the stereotype of what I thought a radiologist would be. I envisioned someone who would never interact with patients and would only stare at images all day. To my surprise, the radiologist I observed spoke to and consulted multiple patients. He told me that he always invited patients to come talk to him about their images if they wanted more information. He was the only one of out of his colleagues to do so, and he explained his desire to better inform patients about their health. His decision to expand his practice to include something not traditionally done made me realize that any physician has the ability to attempt something new that could dramatically improve the care that they provide to patients. The radiologist also explained to me how technology has dramatically changed his field. When he first started practicing, MRI had not even been invented yet. I admired his ability to constantly learn and utilize new technologies over the years. Through this experience, I learned the importance of not being complacent and the value of adaptability to change in healthcare. This radiologist inspired me to aspire to create meaningful change in whatever field end up pursuing.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has allowed me to shadow different physicians across various specialties. Shadowing a diverse range of physicians has given me more information about which field I may see myself going into. My shadowing experiences have given me a deeper understanding of the field of medicine and of the healthcare system. I enjoy learning about the role of different healthcare professionals in providing quality care to patients. The professional development workshops provided by HCMP continue to develop and prepare me as an applicant for medical school.
