Spotlight: Tuka Uzor

Tuka Uzor

My Name is Tuka Uzor and I am a Junior Public Health Major and a Spring 2019 intern for HCMP.

Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most:

During my time in HCMP, I have gained so many enriching and pivotal experiences that have impacted the trajectory of my future career in health care. One of my most cherished experiences was shadowing Dr. Harrod and witnessing the skill it takes to break bad news to a child who had less than a year to live from cancer, I learned the how interpersonal and communication skills are paramount in providing care to patients and informing them about life changing news.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

My experience shadowing various pediatricians through HCMP has definitely opened me up to a career in pediatrics and has inspired me to incorporate advocating for children in my career goals to combat health inequalities.  Through HCMP I have also observed various levels of patient interactions, inpatient and outpatient settings and the different levels of collaboration involved in different areas of medicine.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

My favorite part of HCMP apart from the extensive shadowing experiences, is the community of people within the organization who offer helpful advice, mentor me in several capacities and enlighten me through their perspectives and varied life experiences.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Outside of HCMP and in my free time, I love cooking ethic and continental dishes as well as makeup and skincare activities.
