Spotlight: Sophie Schott

Howdy! My name is Sophie Schott and I am a third-year Humanities and History major in the Liberal Arts Honors Program. I am also pursuing a Certificate in Pre-Health Professions, and have special interests in bioethics and the medical humanities.

Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most:

So far, the most impactful shadowing experience I have had was our meeting with Jeremy Triplett, the Title V Maternal and Child Health Director at the Department of Health and Human Services. Our conversation about how structural violence and the social determinants of health hinder the wellbeing of women and children in Texas pushed me to further examine how I can advocate for under-resourced patients and their families.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has affirmed my passion for medicine and my interest in community-driven initiatives to improve the health and wellbeing of my community.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

I love the huge range of medical specialties we are exposed to. From public health to craniofacial and reconstructive surgery, every aspect of the medical ecosystem is so important and I feel so privileged to have witnessed so many aspects of it!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to run with friends at Town Lake and read articles in The New Yorker!

What else are you involved in?

I’m a member of Texas Orange Jackets and the Editor of Texas Humanities for Humanity, an organization that fosters meaningful relationships between undergraduates and otherwise isolated members of the community by connecting individuals experiencing critical illness with college students who record their life stories.

I work as an undergraduate research assistant in the Osier Lab and a research scholar for the UT Ethics Project. Last spring, I also participated in the Normandy Scholars Program, in which I traveled to Germany, France, Britain, and Poland to examine the causes, conduct, and consequences of the Second World War from a multi-national perspective.
