Spotlight: Sara Mansoorshahi

My name is Sara Mansoorshahi and I am a third-year Neuroscience major. I am an intern with HCMP, and am also involved with the Natural Sciences Council, Humanity First, and the Longhorn Alliance for Refugees and Asylees.

Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most:

I really loved shadowing Dr. Ziebell in the Emergency Department at Seton Medical Center. The Emergency Department is extremely fast paced so it was interesting getting to see him navigate the space and go from patient to patient. He told me a lot about the population they serve and how many people that come in aren’t able to afford a primary care physican and therefore their problems become worse and they need to go to the ER. It was also really nice to see how he comforted patients and let them know that they always should feel comfortable there.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

It has made me realize the kinds of things I want to prioritize professionally. After shadowing in the Emergency Department I realized I prefer to be in an environment more fast paced. Also, HCMP helps a lot with the process of applying to medical school. Before HCMP I didn’t have any people who I could talk to to help me with the process and now I feel like I have a whole group of people who will always be there to ease me through a little.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

THE PEOPLE. I’ve said this a million times before but I genuinely laugh so hard every meeting we have. Since the organization is so small I feel like everyone get comfortable talking and it creates an environment where you feel like you know these people (even if you never met them). I also love how the people are so willing to help one another. There can be a culture in pre med populations of toxicity that I think makes peoples hesitant to be involved in pre med orgs, but it’s the exact opposite in HCMP. Everyone wants to help!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love hanging out with my dogs! They love attention so its easy to spend hours and hours with them.
