Spotlight: Gracie Onyia

My name is Gracie Onyia and I am a junior Biochemistry and Health & Society major. Outside of my role as an HCMP intern, I am a member of the Natural Sciences Council, Texas Spirits, Black Health Professions Organization, a mentor under the You Can Too Program, a Bridging Disciplines Programs Ambassador, and serve as a Texas Student Recruiter with UT Admissions.

Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most:

My shadowing experience with Dr. Bochey in the emergency department was on a busier day than usual, and for that, I got to see how Dr. Bochey communicated with a variety of different patients (I would also say on this day, I was putting my running shoes to work!). It was interesting to see how Dr. Bochey approached each different case; he was very clear, understandable, and straightforward with his patients. Dr. Bochey’s kind and welcoming nature made me extremely comfortable asking questions about his medical journey and sharing my own experiences and background.

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has allowed me to learn about medical practice through a variety of lenses. I’ve witnessed the team-based nature of medicine and how attendings work alongside nurses, medical technicians, residents, interns, and medical students to provide patients with quality care. From shadowing, asking questions, and hearing physician advice, I have gained invaluable insight into what it means to be a physician and have observed what skills are necessary to ensure that as a healthcare professional, you are creating safe and comfortable spaces for your patients.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

I love the community of HCMP and how members are always willing to support one another and offer each other help at any time! Whether you’re seeking advice on navigating medical school applications or needing a friend to talk to, HCMP members are eager to share their knowledge and wisdom. Learning from my peers has been a truly rewarding experience.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love trying new foods at different food spots around Austin, spending time with my friends, listening to music and making playlists, and watching TV shows!
