Spotlight: Avni Vora

My name is Avni Vora and I am a junior Neuroscience and Finance double major. I am an intern with HCMP, and am also involved in Texas 4000 for Cancer and Children’s Association for Maximum Potential.

Describe a shadowing experience that has impacted you the most:

My shadowing experience with Dr. Ed Walsh in the Emergency Medicine Department through an online session provided to HCMP members was a very eye-opening opportunity. Emergency Medicine is such a fascinating field as you face patients of all ages and all conditions. Hearing Dr. Walsh’s stories about his most interesting cases and patients allowed me to realize how variable the day-to-day life is for physicians. Understanding and learning about Dr. Walsh’s approach to treating and diagnosing one patient to another was an experience that I will never forget!

How has HCMP benefited your professional or individual goals?

HCMP has been so integral to my path to medicine! It provided me connections to professionals in the healthcare field and first-hand experience that I would have never been able to receive on my own. And even more importantly, it has provided me a group of people who I can always rely on who share the same goals as me and push me to better myself on a daily basis.

What has been your favorite aspect of HCMP?

My favorite aspect of HCMP is that it is a small-knit organization where we are all able to get to know each other on a personal level. Applying to medical school and the path to medicine can be an overwhelming process, and it is very comforting to have people who are going through the same experience so that we are all able to push each other.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love playing board games, cycling, spikeball, and doing puzzles!
