Texas Guard Auditions

Thank you for your interest in joining LHB and Texas Guard! Below you will find information regarding audition requirements, dates, and more. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to lhbinfo@utexas.edu.

Pre-Screen Video Audition Requirements

• Both Prospective and Returning Texas Guard members must complete a pre-screen video audition.
• All auditioning students are required to audition on flag. If you would like to be considered for a rifle line, you will submit additional materials (see below).
• Submit your pre-screen video audition when you complete the Longhorn Band Interest Form.
• Deadline for submission is June 1 by 11:59pm.  
• Once you have submitted these materials and they have been reviewed, you will receive an email updating your audition status. If you have passed the pre-screen audition, you will be invited to attend our color guard camps in July (attending one of these is required unless excused by the color guard director) and the final audition will be during Band Week in August. The final audition will consist of a short flag routine and a marching component (this audition occurs the 2nd day of Band Week).

Your video audition must consist of: 

• An unlisted (not private) YouTube video; you may also utilize another cloud service
• Introduction (name, hometown, year in school, major) 
• The Basics:  
  • Drop Spins – left and right 
  • Cones – left and right 
  • Pull Hits – left and right 
• Demonstration of several tosses
  • Standard angle/45 
  • Pop toss
  • Horizontal/flat toss
  • Moneyhand/J toss
  • Any additional tosses/underbody skills are welcome, but not necessary. 
• Create a 30 second to one-minute max routine to music of your choosing which includes:  
  • Lower Body Contribution (not just standing in first or second position)
  • Tosses 
  • Exploration of different planes 
  • Exceptional presentation of yourself through use of posture, performance, lower/upper body control, etc.

If submitting a RIFLE audition, your video must include:

• Basic fundamentals
  • Right and left hand spins
  • Flourishes 
  • Starts and Stops 
• Tosses
  • Consistent tosses up to 5’s
  • If you would like to submit for the line, but are not consistent with your 5’s, please submit up to the highest consistent toss.
  • Looking for solid and controlled underbody (first or second position)
  • Additional tosses such as angle toss, horizontal, butt tosses you may have, please also submit 
  • Any additional “tricks” or underbody/turns/etc are welcome, but not necessary. 
• A 30 second to one-minute max routine to music of your choosing OR pre learned choreography from a show that showcase:
  • Lower Body Contribution (not just standing in first or second position)
  • Tosses 
  • Exploration of different planes 
  • Exceptional presentation of yourself through use of posture, performance, lower/upper body control, etc.

Recording Guidelines:

• Please record yourself performing all of the above pre-screen audition material with your fully visible body throughout the recording. We prefer that your audition video be either one continuous video file. If necessary to film in multiple takes, please edit these together into one video file.
• Attire and appearance: all black, form fitting ensemble in either shorts, tights or leggings so your feet and ankles can be seen.  Make sure your face can be seen throughout the video. (if need be, please pin your hair back)
