The Slavic and East European Journal, the publication of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, in partnership with the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (SEELC) at The Ohio State University (OSU), is seeking to hire an assistant editor. The assistant editor, employed by SEELC at OSU, where the journal will be housed after July 1, 2017, will be responsible for the daily operations and smooth functioning of the journal with the following duties: receive manuscripts and present them to the editor, maintain an accurate schedule of the review process, copy edit and proofread scholarly submissions, communicate via social media, and operate an interactive website.

Foreign Service Consular Fellows serve in U.S. embassies and consulates overseas alongside Foreign Service Officers, other U.S. agency personnel, and locally-employed staff. Using their language skills in Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, or Russian, their primary duty is to adjudicate visas for foreign nationals. Duties and responsibilities are similar to those of entry-level career Foreign Service Officers. American Councils seeks an Academic Advisor for the USA Pavilion Student Ambassadorship Program in Astana, Kazakhstan as part of the 2017 World Expo. The USA Pavilion Student Ambassadorship Program will bring 40 qualified Student Ambassadors to the 2017 Expo in Kazakhstan, where they will represent the U.S. Pavilion in various capacities. The Academic Advisor will work closely with the American Councils D.C. office to develop a two-credit course for the USA Pavilion Student Ambassadors that focuses on cross-cultural communication and strengthens students’ critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, and global understanding through assignments, reflection, journal writing, and feedback sessions. The Academic Advisor will play a lead role in creating the course syllabus, teach the course on a weekly basis in Astana, review assignments, and provide feedback to students via face-to-face meetings, Internet, and email. All offers are contingent upon ability to receive and maintain a visa to the host country.

ANTICIPATED EMPLOYMENT DATE:  Early June to mid-September 2017

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• In coordination with American Councils, design an interactive, two-credit course on intercultural communication to be taught during the program;
• In coordination with American Councils, develop complete course syllabus, providing a description of the course’s overall goals, weekly assignments and classroom topics, explanations of grade formulations, and required readings;
• Develop and employ classroom activities to help students better understand their experiences in a new culture, develop stronger cross-cultural communication skills, and explore fundamental concepts of culture.
• Develop weekly assignments on intercultural communication to be graded each week, and returned to students with comments;
• Hold regular offices hours and be widely accessible to students on a flexible, daily basis in order to accommodate students schedules as pavilion ambassadors;
• Submit weekly written updates to the American Councils Outbound office and participate in weekly conference calls with the Outbound office;
• Review all American Councils student policies and enforce program rules and requirements in consultation with Washington, DC office; and
• Perform other program-related tasks as directed.

Academic Studies Press is seeking candidates for the position of Acquisitions Editor or Acquisitions Editor Associate.

The Acquisitions Editor or Acquisitions Editor Associate will be responsible for acquiring scholarly and academic titles in Slavic and Eurasian Studies.

Candidates should have a PhD in Slavic or Eurasian Studies or a related field. Preference will be given to a candidate with editorial experience and a record of acquisitions, extensive contacts with a wide array of potential authors, and fluency in the critical literature of and the newest developments in these fields. Experience in securing funding for books requiring subsidies is desirable. The successful candidate for this position will work with the Director of the Press to design a focused publishing program, taking into consideration the best opportunities in these fields, as well as the candidate’s interests, professional training, and publishing experience.

The Acquisitions Editor or Acquisition Editor Associate  will carry out the following responsibilities:

• Solicit and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts in the above stated areas
• Solicit, evaluate, and process reports from peer reviewers
• Present proposed books to the Director of Press
• Negotiate contracts
• Prepare accurate budgets for books acquired
• Identify and secure funding for books requiring subsidies
• Maintain accurate and timely schedules for transmittal of manuscripts to production
• Actively participate in sales and marketing plans for promoting publications

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship to be held at the Centre for Ethics, University of Toronto (C4E), during the 2017-18 academic year. We welcome candidates with research interests from diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, philosophy, law, political science, the social sciences, and the humanities, that further the C4E’s mission as an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing teaching and research in the field of ethics, broadly defined, by bringing together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life. To get a sense of the disciplinary range and diversity of C4E events, activities, and projects, candidates are encouraged to consult the C4E website (http://ethics.utoronto.ca).

Under the direction of the Director, Centre for Ethics, the successful candidate will conduct research and participate in C4E events, activities, and projects, and will help to develop an interdisciplinary ethics community across campus and to foster public discourse on issues of ethical import in all aspects of individual, social, and political life. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach one single-semester course in each of the fall and winter terms.

The appointment term is from August 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018, at a combined research and teaching stipend of $46,000 per year.

Applicants must have completed all requirements for their doctorate by July 31, 2017. Candidates must also be no more than 5 years from the awarding of their degree, and cannot have accepted or hold a tenure-track position.
