Standard-Based Approaches to Teaching Polish Language

Organized by: Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago
Location: Chicago, IL (Specific location, TBA)

This workshop will bring together instructors to share their practices and materials, as they relate to teaching Polish.  The focus of this workshop will be on standard-based approaches to teaching language, especially alongside ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language, www.actfl.org) proficiency and world-readiness standards.  This workshop will serve as a forum for exchange of the most successful topics, projects, and syllabi from the most recent years of teaching, across participants’ institutions.

The workshop will consist of individual or group presentations, 20 minutes in length.

There will be one panel dedicated especially to K-12 Polish language teaching, including Saturday Schools, and the committee asks that papers submitted for this panel be noted as such in their proposal.

We invite all Polish language instructors to apply to present at the workshop, however, presenting is not a requirement, as we also encourage attendance in order to learn from practices of other instructors. Funding: Visiting Fellows Program – Predoctoral Scholars (Emory University)

The James Weldon Johnson Institute of Emory University invites applications for its Visiting Fellows Program. Supported by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Johnson Institute offers five fellowships per year.

  • Visiting Fellowships for Post-Doctoral and Advanced Scholars: Three (3) fellowships for both junior and senior scholars and their career equivalents. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship period in August 2019. Fellows will each teach one course in the spring semester.
  • Visiting Fellowships for Pre-Doctoral Scholars: Two (2) fellowships for doctoral dissertation completion. Dissertation Fellows are not required to teach courses.

We welcome applications from scholars in the humanities. We are interested in research projects across the spectrum of the humanities that examine the origins, evolution, impact and legacy of race, difference, and the modern quest for civil and human rights. We also support research projects that examine race and ethnicity and its points of intersection with other identities and movements addressing differences along gender, class, religious, or sexual lines. Visiting Fellows will be in residence at Emory for the academic year 2019-2020.

Internship: The Altai Project (Altai)

Deadline for Applications: Ongoing

The Altai region, encompassing land in Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia, is a unique environment home to many threatened and endangered species. Historical artifacts, such as petroglyphs and burial mounds, dating all the way back to the Stone Age are located in the relatively untouched region, with local significance for indigenous populations and international visitors. The region is in danger from climate change, poaching, and increased tourism leading to more construction and energy projects.

The Altai Project has regular short-term opportunities and internships for people with relevant expertise to get involved: natural sciences, issues of concern to indigenous peoples, climate change, alternative energy and energy conservation, natural building and sustainable design, land use planning, wildlife biology.

They are also in regular need of volunteer translators (Russian, Altaian, and English), web support, graphic designers/desktop publishing, and writers/editors.

CFP: TROIKA Undergraduate Magazine (UC Berkeley)

Deadline for Applications: January 15th, 2019

CREEES students are invited to submit works for consideration in the Spring 2019 publication of TROIKA, UC Berkeley’s undergraduate magazine in Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies.

TROIKA publishes academic writing, artwork, photography, creative writing, translations, opinion columns, etc.. If any of your students are interested in submitting work to the magazine for consideration, please have them email submissions or questions to troikaberkeley@gmail.com.

Submission Criteria:

  • Undergraduate work or art concerning Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies·
  • MLA formatting for academic papers
  • No more than 15 pages double-spaced (longer papers may be considered but will likely be abridged)
  • JPG/PNG formatting for images

Prof. Devt: Webinar “Online Resources for Russian Teachers” (ACTR)

This presentation will introduce a variety of internet resources that can help students and teachers organize their learning and make it more effective and engaging. The presenter will address the following questions:

Where can you find authentic audios and videos? What are the trusted sites for language activities, grammar explanations, pictures and stories? Where can students find additional grammar materials, sources for practicing reading and listening comprehension? What resources can teachers use for professional development?

Funding: LTLR Grants (Pitt SLI)

Deadline for Applications: February 1, 2019

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) Grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site at Pitt’s Summer Language Institute in June – July 2019. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see www.sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered. Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for either all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects. CFP: Econ. History of Rus (Uni. Wisconsin-Madison)

Call for Papers: Summer Workshop on the Economic History and Historical Political Economy of Russia.

The workshop will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 24-25, 2019. Proposals are due December 1, 2018.

Young scholars, including those currently pursuing PhD degrees, are especially encouraged to apply. Interested scholars are also encouraged to attend, even if not on the program. Travel grants and accommodation will be provided for selected graduate students, regardless of proposal status, and for all presenters.

Those interested in presenting should send an abstract and a 3–5 page paper summary by December 1 to events@creeca.wisc.edu. Applicants will be notified of proposal status by January 15, 2019. The deadline for final paper submission is May 1.

CFP: Eu/Eurasian Undergrad Research (Uni. Pittsburgh)

Deadline for Submissions: January 25, 2019

On Friday, April 12, 2019, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES), the European Studies Center (ESC), and the International Business Center (IBC) at the University of Pittsburgh will sponsor the annual European and Eurasian Undergraduate Research Symposium. Modeled after traditional academic conferences, this event will give students the opportunity to present their research papers on Europe, Russia and/or Eurasia to discussants and an audience. Limited travel grants are available to help defray expenses for accepted participants located outside of the Pittsburgh region. Deadlines:
1) Students must submit applications with 250-300 word abstracts and paper drafts by January 25, 2019.
2) Selected students will be notified by mid-February 2019.
3) Final revised papers are due by March 25, 2019.

Academic Job: Summer Russian Instructor (ASU CLI)

Arizona State University seeks a faculty associate to teach intensive Russian in its 2019 summer Critical Languages Institute. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching independently, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidates will teach Russian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming.

Academic Job: Visiting Prof. Ukrainian Studies (Columbia Uni.)

Visiting Professor in Ukrainian Studies, Open Rank, 2019-2020 (one semester)

Columbia University invites applications for an appointment in Ukrainian studies to be filled at the rank of assistant, associate, or full visiting professor for one semester (fall or spring) in the academic year 2019-2020. Rank commensurate with experience. Ph.D. or equivalent is required. History is the preferred area of research and teaching specialization, but literary/cultural studies and other areas will also be considered. The successful candidate will be appointed in one of the Humanities or Social Science Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and will teach two courses: a course of broad interest for upper-level undergraduates and a second course for graduate students. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to give one public lecture and to participate in the academic life of the University, including as an affiliate of the Harriman Institute.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three persons who may be asked to provide a letter of reference, a modest sample (article or book or dissertation chapter) of scholarship, and past teaching evaluations, if available. The letter of application should include a statement indicating which semester the applicant prefers to teach, a short list of possible courses which the applicant might teach, and a description of the applicant’s current research interests.
