Peace Fellowship Application

Each year, Rotary funds some of the world’s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centers. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution; many go on to careers in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank.

Applications for the 2018-19 Rotary Peace Fellowship program are now being accepted. The deadline for applicants to submit applications to their district is 31 May. Districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July.

2017 Webinar Series

Two-Part Series on Grants, presented by Amanda Jeanne Swain, executive director of the Humanities Commons at UC Irvine. In her position, Swain provides training and mentoring for faculty and graduate students in developing research and grant proposals. She oversees faculty research support services such as research clusters, research residencies and School-based centers. Amanda co-leads Humanities Out There Public Fellows, an internship program for humanities PhD students, along with coordinating School-wide graduate professional development programming. Swain holds a PhD in History and a Master’s degree in International Studies from the University of Washington.

Finding Grants for Your Research Project: Thursday, Feb. 16, 2:00-3:00 pm ET

The first step in getting grants is finding funding sources that match your research needs and areas of scholarship. Amanda Swain will provide strategies for identifying potential funding sources, determining best fit, and organizing the application process. The webinar will focus on funding resources for graduate students and early career scholars.

Structuring Your Grant Proposal: Thursday, Feb. 23, 2:00-3:00 pm ET

Grant reviewers typically read a lot of proposals in a short period of time. How can a grant proposal best communicate the value of your project and how it fulfills the grant-makers’ criteria and priorities? Amanda Swain will discuss best practices for structure a project narrative that showcases your scholarship and recognizes that funders have their own goals in grant-making

DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTIONS AWARD

Established in 1970 the Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies Award honors eminent members of the profession who have made major contributions to the field through scholarship of the highest quality, mentoring, leadership, and/or service to the profession. The prize is intended to recognize diverse contributions across the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies field.

NOMINATING INSTRUCTIONS

The Committee accepts nominations in writing or via e-mail from any member of ASEEES.

Submit the nomination letter(s) to the Committee Chair.

The nomination letter should include: biography focusing on the individual’s distinguished achievments in Slavic, East European and Eurasian studies; a list of publications and editorships; a list of awards and prizes; his or her contributions in mentoring and training; and his or her involvement in and service to ASEEES and/or the profession, if any.

Self-nomination is not accepted.

Committe members also survey the field for possible awardees.

2017 Discover Russian STARTALK Teacher Professional Development

American Councils for International Education and Fairfax County Public Schools/TJHSST will offer a professional development program for teachers of Russian: “Roadmap for the Teaching and Learning of Russian with the World-Readiness Standards”

Program Dates: July 17 – 28, 2017 (FAIRFAX, VA)

Arrival Date: Out of town participants may arrive on Sunday,  July 16, 2017.
Last Day of Program: Friday, July 28th is a half day. Program ends at Noon.

This standards-based course is designed to provide teachers of Russian an intensive two week professional development program that focuses on current pedagogical theory in the teaching and learning of Russian. Program discussions will the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Participants will also learn how technology can help their students increase language proficiency, and how to develop assessments that target the three learning modes. Other discussion topics will include how to create comprehensible input in classes that leads to comprehensible output, as well as more advanced elements of differentiated instruction. Micro-teaching and observation will be integral parts of the course.  A two day MOPI (Modified Oral Proficiency Interview) training workshop will be included in this program. Prof. Devel.: Language Teaching and Learning Research Grants (U. of Pittsburgh)

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) Grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site at the Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) in June – July 2017. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see www.sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered. Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for either all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects.

Guidelines: Applicants should propose projects that will take advantage of the unique environment and resources available at an intensive campus-based summer language institute, while not placing excessive demands on the time of SLI instructors or students. Projects involving the development of online language instructional materials are of particular interest, but other types of projects that make significant contributions to language teaching and learning will also be considered. Successful applicants will be responsible for obtaining IRB approval or exemption for research projects involving human subjects and for obtaining the informed consent of research subjects, if applicable, before starting to work on their projects.

LTLR grant recipients will be expected to submit a report of their research results to REES by October 2017; to acknowledge REES and the SLI as sponsors in any publications based on their funded projects; and to make their research products (including raw data, if possible) available for dissemination to other language instructors and scholars on a University of Pittsburgh website. Eligibility requirements

  • Proficiency in English; proficiency in a second language is strongly recommended
  • Strong commitment to international understanding and peace as demonstrated through professional and academic achievements and personal or community service
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Master’s degree applicants: minimum three years of related full-time work or volunteer experience, bachelor’s degree
  • Certificate applicants: minimum five years of related full-time work or volunteer experience, strong academic background

Prof. Devel.: 11th Annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis (HSE)

The 11th Annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis “The EU Practices for Young Researchers: Studying Economics of Institutional Development” (RSSIA 2017) is organized by the Center for Institutional Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics (CInSt, HSE). We focus on recent developments in NIE and possibilities and challenges of applied research in the institutional economics framework. RSSIA 2017 is aimed at disseminating the best practices of institutional change and effective institutional reforms to assure their successful application at the less developed markets and the economies in or immediately after the transition. The schedule of the Summer School includes lectures, seminars and plenty of possibilities to discuss the participants’ research projects.
Priority in the selection will be given to research projects that are related to the following fields:
— Economics of public sector, bureaucracy, and procurement
— Economics of education

— Banks and financial markets
— Industrial organization, government regulation, and law enforcement
— Property rights, institutions and economic development
There is no registration fee. Organizers cover participants’ accommodation and meals costs. However, participants cover their travel and visa costs.
All RSSIA participants will have an opportunity:
— to attend the lectures of distinguished experts in various spheres of institutional economics and adjoining disciplines;
— to present and discuss research during seminars;
— to exchange the research experience with other RSSIA participants and faculty members;
— and consequently, to improve their research significantly.

2017 Fundamentals of Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) Online Institute

Embark on a journey of discovery in which you will learn more about the elements of high quality, rigorous Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). During this year’s online institute, you’ll explore PBLL’s connections with experiential learning, career pathways, 21st Century Skills, performance-based assessment, and your own instructional context. Scholarship: Funding for Int’l Business & STEM Internships in Russia (American Councils)

American Councils is pleased to announce a new scholarship to support U.S. undergraduate and graduate students participating in business, innovation, and STEM internships in Russia.

The Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarship supports U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who seek to participate in one of two American Councils internship programs in Russia:

Scholarship Awards
Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic merit, and program compatibility; awards range from $3,000 to $5,000.

Eligibility
U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in business or STEM fields are eligible to apply for American Councils Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarships. Applicants must be admitted to either OPIT or BRLI to receive funding. No prior study of Russian is required to participate in OPIT.

Application & Questions
