CFP: 6th International Conference of the EAM: Realism(s) of the Avant-Garde and Modernism (Münster)

EAM, The European Network for Avant-garde and Modernism Studies: The avant-gardes of the 20th century defined themselves, and are defined by us, essentially by their relations to various concepts of realism.

(1) Mostly, they distinguish themselves eagerly from the realisms of the 19th-century.
(2) Nevertheless, they often claim some kind of truth or higher realism – super-realism – for themselves, claiming to have access to some primary reality that cannot be presented in traditional arts.
(3) These super-realisms are in turn challenged by movements such as New Objectivity, Magic Realism, or different varieties of political popular art, which in their turn claim to be more realistic than the supposedly outmoded avant-gardes.
(4) Even the neo-avant-gardes and other movements from the second half of the 20th century to the present day have to deal with concurrent varieties of ‘realism‘ (just think of Mario Amaya calling Pop ‘the New Super Realism’). CFP: Otherness in Russian Literature and Culture (Oxford)

Description
The concept of otherness has always played a pivotal role in the human condition. Finely interwoven into human nature, otherness can take many shapes and forms – from an accent, a dress code, or the colour of one’s skin, to less visible markers of perceived and felt otherness. But what is the scope of otherness in the context of Russia, a country whose endless swathes of land are home to a myriad array of people of diverse and multifaceted backgrounds and identities? Where does Russia end and the Other begin, and how have perceptions of these identities changed throughout the ages? Can otherness be positive, or is it always a negative phenomenon?

This interdisciplinary conference invites proposals for papers from a variety of disciplines in Russian studies, including, but not limited to: literature, film, art, music, gender studies, history, politics, anthropology and digital humanities. Competition: Machine Learning (Moscow)

The IDAO (International Data Analysis Olympiad), created by leading experts in data analysis for their future colleagues, aims to bring together analysts, scientists, professionals, and junior researchers from all over the world on a single platform. This is the first time an event of this scale will be held in Russia. The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, Yandex and Harbour. Space University organize the Olympiad with the support of Sverbank.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Virginia welcomes applications for three graduate programs, the MA in Contemporary Russian Studies, the MA in Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the MA+PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures. The
MA in Contemporary Russian Studies offers courses in Russian literature, language, culture, history, politics, art history, religious studies, and sociology, as well as further study in advanced
Russian language. The MA and MA+PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures train scholars primarily in Russian literature and culture. At the PhD level students take secondary offerings in Polish language and Polish and Central European literature. Students may also take courses in related areas in other language departments, English, History, and Religious Studies, among many others.

What does it mean to be a ‘post-Soviet person’ today? The Soviet Union was created and held together on the premise that the power of class consciousness could create a community that transcends the limitations of ethnicity and language. The events of 1991 shattered this illusion. As the USSR dissolved, newly created states and people across the post-Soviet space were left with the task of figuring out who they were and to what country, body politic, language, and culture they belonged. In the early post-Soviet years, this process was manifested in social violence in the form of armed conflicts in Georgia and Moldova, the expulsion of Russian nationals from Central Asian states, and criminal infighting over the privatization of former Soviet industrial complexes. As time passed, however, it began to seem that the people and states of the region were embarking on an era of peaceful co-existence, built on shared recognition of their common history and present situation in the world.

Project Description:
The American Research Institute of the South Caucasus invites proposals from collaborative teams in support of the preservation and conservation of the Republic of Armenia’s archaeological and historical heritage. This ARISC program, generously funded by Project Discovery! and donors, seeks to foster joint work between American and Armenian scholars and institutions dedicated to the proper curation and preservation of heritage materials such as artifacts, sites, and manuscripts. Successful applications will demonstrate substantive collaborations that not only contribute to heritage conservation but also demonstrate efforts to build capacity and enhance local knowledge of current techniques and approaches to heritage management. These grants require active participation of both American and Armenian principal investigators in all aspects of the collaborative project.

Examples of potential projects include:

  • Restoration of threatened archaeological remains
  • Stabilization of historical resources
  • Long-term protection for archaeological sites or historical monuments
  • Curation and permanent exhibition of heritage materials
  • Cataloging and recording of collections
  • Digitization of heritage materials for wider public access
  • Enhancement of conservation lab facilities
  • Advanced training for specialists

Given the level of funding, these awards can also be used as seed grants to demonstrate the feasibility of a pilot program and/or in concert with funds from parallel sources.
