Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP)

TUTOR/ACTIVITY GUIDE — Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian
Position Dates: June 10 – August 7, 2019
The Tutor, under the direct supervision of the Language Coordinator, assists SILP students in their academic coursework outside of class (approximately 10 hours/week).
Qualifications:
- Advanced fluency (Advanced Low or above) in the target language
- Experience tutoring and/or working with foreign language learners
- B.A. with a foreign language major or equivalent preferred
- M.A. in foreign language teaching in progress preferred
Responsibilities:
- Become familiar with curriculum and assignments for each of the course sections
- Create a tutoring schedule based on student input, to include drop-in hours and sign-up sessions v Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students
- Coordinate with faculty and administration to ensure optimum assistance to students
- Occasionally co-teach classes with faculty
- Prepare supplementary materials to be used during tutoring sessions
- Participate in pre-program orientation and other meetings as necessary
- Attend student orientation meetings and assist with placement testing as necessary
- Complete and submit an end-of-program feedback sheet
- Maintain strong communication with faculty and administration
Schedule: Schedule to be set in coordination with the administration; typically, tutoring takes place in the afternoons and/or early mornings (including some evenings and weekends).
The Activity Guide, under the direct supervision of the Language Coordinator, facilitates co-curricular activities for SILP students (5–10 hours/week).
Qualifications:
- Advanced fluency (Advanced Low or above) in the target language
- Experience working with foreign language learners
- Experience organizing and facilitating group events
- B.A. with a foreign language major or equivalent preferred
- Familiarity with social media (blogs, Facebook, Twitter) and technology
Responsibilities:
- Develop and actively participate in creative and engaging cultural and social activities in the target language
- Promote enthusiasm and interaction for activities among students and faculty
- Organize a means of effective communication with students and faculty to promote activities and log information (e.g., Facebook)
- Coordinate with instructors to create relevant activities that are integrated with classroom themes and have clear content and language objectives
- Participate in pre-program activities workshop/training
- Arrange with Language Coordinator regarding the tracking of activity costs
- Complete necessary administrative duties
- Complete and submit an end-of-program feedback sheet
- Maintain strong communication with faculty and administration
Schedule: Schedule to be set in coordination with the administration; typically, co-curricular events take place in the late afternoons, evenings, and occasionally on weekends.
