The International Student and Scholar Advisor is an active member of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISS) and advises a heavy caseload of F1 and J1 visa students on legal matters which affect their maintenance of non-immigrant student status. The ISS Advisor is responsible for applying federal regulatory parameters to determine whether non-immigrant student and exchange faculty members are compliant with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS) regulations. Individual serves as a university “Designated School Official” (DSO) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and as an “Alternate Responsible Officer” (ARO) for the U.S. Department of State’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. The ISS Advisor works as part of a team to provide high-quality support services to international students and scholars including orientation, support with cultural adjustment, and a successful engagement with the DePaul community.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assist with advising caseload of F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant students on maintenance of non-immigrant legal status, which affects eligibility to obtain visas at U.S. Embassies worldwide; lawfully enroll and work; travel internationally without incident; maintain future eligibility to change non-immigrant status and/or apply for permanent U.S. residency, and to avoid consequences for non-compliance.
  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) on record with DHS and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) on record with the Department of State as responsible for carrying out federally mandated responsibilities on behalf of the University.
  • Regularly process applications for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Academic Training (AT).
  • Manage and conduct portions of ISS quarterly orientations for all incoming F1 and J1 students on topics related to maintenance of lawful status, cultural adjustment, university resources, and academic issues.
  • Advocate for students with the following federal agencies:  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of State (DOS), and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
  • Liaise with internal DePaul stakeholders including College Academic Advising Offices, Dean of Students Office, Academic Programs, Admitting units, DePaul Central, and other student support service offices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • A minimum of 18 months of experience in international education or a related field
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal law governing non-immigrant students and scholars, keen analytical and interpretive skills, and excellent cross-cultural communication skills.  
  • Must be able to handle a heavy caseload in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and experience determining priorities effectively while adhering to deadlines are necessary.
