Call for Chapters: “Youth Responses to Russia’s War against Ukraine,” Edited Volume

Deadline: July 21, 2023

Editors: Allyson Edwards (Bath Spa University, UK); Ian Garner (Queen’s U, Canada)

Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: Friday 21 July to ian.garner@queensu.ca

Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine has provoked heated responses across the territories formerly occupied by the Soviet Union and within Russia. Real and staged demonstrations, artistic movements, and social media conflicts pertaining to young people have sprung up throughout the region as new views, alliances, and identities are shaped in response to war.

We are pleased to announce a call for abstracts for an edited volume on young people’s responses to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Material from disciplines spanning politics, sociology, history, war studies, and beyond is welcome. We are seeking contributions with perspectives from youth living in countries that were under Soviet or communist rule. Possible topics might include:

equity-deserving groups’ responses to the conflict (LGBTQ+, people of colour, Indigenous responses)

young people’s changing opinions about the war

how political and cultural identity is being formed or changed

social media responses to the war

artistic and cultural movements reflecting on the conflict

youth political activism

We are particularly keen to hear from junior scholars, scholars from equity-deserving groups, and scholars from Central Asia.

Interested contributors should send a 250-500 word abstract and a short biography to Ian Garner, ian.garner@queensu.ca by July 21. Ian will also be happy to respond to general expressions of interest or discuss potential contributions before abstract submission.
