CFP: “New Directions in Baltic Studies”

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) conference will be held May 28th-30th 2020, in Charlotte, NC (USA) at Queens University. The conference theme is “New Directions in Baltic Studies.” We encourage papers which explore new directions in the field: new and innovative research methods, case studies, pedagogy, and research areas. Paper proposals will be accepted from faculty, other scholars and independent researchers, and advanced graduate students. Proposals from undergraduates or first-year graduate students require lead authors to be full-time faculty members. We are accepting proposals for panels, workshops, posters, and individual papers in the fields of history, politics, social sciences, culture, economics, education and pedagogy, digital humanities, libraries, literature, film, language, the Baltic diaspora, and the arts. 

Proposal abstracts of 250 words or less, with name, email, and institutional affiliation, can be emailed as an attachment to aabs2020@wingate.edu.

This special issue of the I-LanD Journal will focus on L2 identities in the age of transnational mobility. It will be edited by Annarita Magliacane (Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom), Anne Marie Devlin (University College Cork, Ireland) and Noriko Iwasaki (Nanzan University, Japan).  

Submission of abstracts

Authors wishing to contribute to this issue are invited to send an abstract of their proposed article of not more than 300 words (excluding references) in MS Word format by 1st November 2019. CFP: Havighurst Young Researchers Conference, Cuma, Italy

New Perspectives in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies

The Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies at Miami University (Ohio) welcomes applications from advanced graduate students and recent doctoral recipients (ABD to 5 years beyond Ph.D.) for the upcoming international Young Researchers Conference. The conference will take place from June 13-June 16th in Cuma, Italy at the Villa Vergiliana (Harry T. Wilks Center for Classical Studies) in the intimate surroundings of the Bay of Naples. 

This call for papers aims for a broad range of proposals with a focus on Russia, Eastern Europe, and/or Eurasia. Papers will be pre-circulated and read by the conference participants, Havighurst faculty, and the key-note speakers. Because the theme is an open one, selection will be based not just on the quality of the proposals but on the interdisciplinary themes that emerge from these proposals. This conference offers participants the opportunity to workshop their recent research. 

The Havighurst Center will cover room and board and the cost of an excursion in the area. Limited travel funds are available. 

The deadline for the submission of the proposals is November 1st. Please send a one page abstract (no more than 500 words) and one-page CVs to the havighurstcenter@miamioh.edu with the subject 2020YRCproposal.

The Department of German, Russian, and East European Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Russian Language to join our expanding interdisciplinary department. This is a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track position with an initial term of three years.  Our ideal candidate will be skilled in Communicative Language Teaching practices. The successful candidate will serve as the Russian language program coordinator, will conduct Russian language instruction at all levels, and will coordinate study abroad and other immersion opportunities.

Acad. Job: Alpha Fellowship (Moscow)

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Since 2004, the program has enabled over 180 emerging leaders to gain professional experience at leading organizations in business, media, law, policy, and other related areas through this 11-month, fully-funded fellowship in Moscow.

The Alfa Fellowship Program begins with language training in the fellow’s geographic location followed by a language course in Moscow starting in mid-June. Throughout the summer, Alfa Fellows attend a seminar program with key public and private sector officials to discuss current affairs in Russia. Fellows then work at prominent organizations, including private companies, media outlets, think tanks, and foundations. Trips to cities in the region are interspersed throughout the program year. The in-country portion of the program lasts from mid-June until late April.

Eligible candidates must have a bachelor degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or a related field. Russian language proficiency is not required, but is preferred. The Fellowship includes a generous monthly stipend, language training, program-related travel costs, housing, and insurance.

Job: Outreach Coordinator European Union Center (University of Illinois)

The European Union Center (EUC) is searching for an Outreach Coordinator to develop, implement, and assess the outreach programs and public events. As a Title VI National Resource Center and Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, the incumbent will represent the EUC to external and internal constituencies. Provide programs for diverse constituents, including University of Illinois faculty and students, K-16 educators and students, the business community, media, government officials, and the general public.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage EUC’s outreach programs and projects under the direction of the Associate Director, with primary responsibility for logistical planning, coordinating speakers, conferences, workshops and public events.
  • Serve as the EUC’s Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Coordinator/Advisor, in the capacity of coordinating application reviews and award notifications, advising fellows, and data collection and reporting.
  • Manage EUC’s communication channels, including listservs, electronic newsletters, websites and social media, primarily targeted to constituencies and partners at the campus, local, national, and international levels.
  • Initiate new programs and events for EUC’s internal and external constituencies, and participate in long-range planning and goal-setting activities for the Center.
  • Develop and organize outreach and curriculum development programs for K-16 educators and students.
  • Assist the Associate Director with budgeting, proposals and reporting to funding agencies, and other administrative tasks of the Center.
  • Collaborate with other area studies personnel and faculty to design, coordinate, staff, and implement joint outreach activities.
  • Assign and review work of graduate student assistants, interns, and other support staff, under the direction of the Associate Director, with primary responsibility for outreach and office operations.
  • Participate in professional organization conferences to represent the EUC as well as deliver presentations.
  • Assist with ongoing outreach programming evaluation, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the center.
