Funding: Young Faculty Award (DoD and National Security)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award (YFA) program aims to identify and engage rising stars in junior faculty positions in academia and equivalent positions at non-profit research institutions and expose them to Department of Defense (DoD) and National Security challenges and needs. In particular, this YFA will provide high-impact funding to elite researchers early in their careers to develop innovative new research directions in the context of enabling transformative DoD capabilities. The long-term goal of the program is to develop the next generation of scientists and engineers in the research community who will focus a significant portion of their future careers on DoD and National Security issues. DARPA is particularly interested in identifying outstanding researchers who have previously not been performers on DARPA programs, but the program is open to all qualified applicants with innovative research ideas.

Funding: Dissertation Fieldwork Grants in Anthropology (Wenner-Gren Foundation)

Deadline: May 1 and November 1

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants are awarded to aid doctoral or thesis research. The program contributes to the Foundation’s overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity’s cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. The Foundation supports research that demonstrates a clear link to anthropological theory and debates, and promises to make a solid contribution to advancing these ideas. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that employ a comparative perspective, can generate innovative approaches or ideas, and/or integrate two or more subfields.

The maximum amount of the Dissertation Fieldwork Grant is US $20,000.  Please note that the Foundation has suspended the Osmundsen Initiative supplement  Grants are non-renewable.

Students must be enrolled in a doctoral program (or equivalent, if applying from outside the United States) at the time of application. Students of all nationalities are eligible to apply.  There is no time limit on the duration of the grant, and funding may be requested to cover distinct research phases (for example, two summers) if this is part of the research design. Application deadlines are May 1 and November 1. Final decisions are made six months later.

Applicants must submit application materials using the Foundation’s online application submission procedure.

Funding: Kellog Institute Visiting Fellowships (Faculty)

Since 1983, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies has offered visiting fellowships to promote interdisciplinary international research in a supportive community of scholars. This widely respected residential program offers you time to pursue scholarly inquiry where it takes you, advance your personal research, and collaborate with other scholars and practitioners from across the US and around the globe.

As a visiting fellow, you pursue research related to Kellogg Institute themes of democracy and human development, share your research with the Notre Dame scholarly community, and have the opportunity to publish in Kellogg’s peer-reviewed Working Paper Series.

Who is Eligible?

We invite applications from scholars and practitioners who conduct international research on our themes of democracy and/or human development. Applicants may come from any country and typically fall into three groups:

  • Promising junior and midcareer scholars (typically postdocs and assistant or associate professors)
  • Distinguished senior scholars with an established record of scholarly excellence
  • Accomplished policy makers, journalists, and other practitioners whose knowledge and experience can link policy and scholarship

Title VIII Short Term Grants – Deadline: September 30, 2019

The Kennan Institute offers Title VIII Short-Term Grants to scholars whose research in the social sciences or humanities focuses on Russia, Ukraine, and the countries of Eurasia, and who demonstrate a particular need to utilize the library, archival, and other specialized resources of the Washington, D.C. area. Policy-relevant research is preferred. Academic participants must an MA degree or higher, or demonstrate commensurate professional experience. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for Title VIII Short-Term Grants.

Study Abroad/Grad Program: Higher School of Economics (Moscow)

Deadline for Spring Semester: September 30, 2019

HSE is one of Russia’s largest and most modern state universities. Established in 1992 as a program in economics, HSE currently offers 223 programs for undergraduate students Master’s students. 28 Master’s programs and 6 undergraduate programs are currently offered entirely in English. At its four campuses – in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm and Nizhny Novgorod – HSE offers instruction to more than 32,000 students each year.

Because HSE attracts the best and brightest from throughout Russia, most students have a high level of proficiency in English. The study programs offer a wide variety of courses taught in English in the fields of economics, humanities, finance and the social sciences. Students from abroad can take classes in English from other HSE programs as well as study Russian as a Foreign language. The International Office at the Faculty of Economic Sciences is willing to work to satisfy any necessary requirements to make this possible. Starting 2019-2020 AY, Faculty of Economic Sciences opens English taught track in master program Applied Economics, which, by itself increase the number of master level courses open for international students’ enrollment. Special research seminar dedicated to the Russian economy and Economics of Development will also accept applications from non-degree exchange and visiting students.

CFP: “New Directions in Baltic Studies”

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) conference will be held May 28th-30th 2020, in Charlotte, NC (USA) at Queens University. The conference theme is “New Directions in Baltic Studies.” We encourage papers which explore new directions in the field: new and innovative research methods, case studies, pedagogy, and research areas. Paper proposals will be accepted from faculty, other scholars and independent researchers, and advanced graduate students. Proposals from undergraduates or first-year graduate students require lead authors to be full-time faculty members. We are accepting proposals for panels, workshops, posters, and individual papers in the fields of history, politics, social sciences, culture, economics, education and pedagogy, digital humanities, libraries, literature, film, language, the Baltic diaspora, and the arts. 

Proposal abstracts of 250 words or less, with name, email, and institutional affiliation, can be emailed as an attachment to aabs2020@wingate.edu.

This special issue of the I-LanD Journal will focus on L2 identities in the age of transnational mobility. It will be edited by Annarita Magliacane (Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom), Anne Marie Devlin (University College Cork, Ireland) and Noriko Iwasaki (Nanzan University, Japan).  

Submission of abstracts

Authors wishing to contribute to this issue are invited to send an abstract of their proposed article of not more than 300 words (excluding references) in MS Word format by 1st November 2019. Proposals should not contain the authors’ name and academic/professional affiliation and should be accompanied by an email including such personal information and sent to: a.magliacane@ucc.ie; annaritamagliacane@gmail.com;amdevlin@ucc.ie; niwasaki@nanzan-u.ac.jp and ilandjournal@unior.it. CFP: Havighurst Young Researchers Conference, Cuma, Italy

New Perspectives in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies

The Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies at Miami University (Ohio) welcomes applications from advanced graduate students and recent doctoral recipients (ABD to 5 years beyond Ph.D.) for the upcoming international Young Researchers Conference. The conference will take place from June 13-June 16th in Cuma, Italy at the Villa Vergiliana (Harry T. Wilks Center for Classical Studies) in the intimate surroundings of the Bay of Naples. 

This call for papers aims for a broad range of proposals with a focus on Russia, Eastern Europe, and/or Eurasia. Papers will be pre-circulated and read by the conference participants, Havighurst faculty, and the key-note speakers. Because the theme is an open one, selection will be based not just on the quality of the proposals but on the interdisciplinary themes that emerge from these proposals. This conference offers participants the opportunity to workshop their recent research. 

The Havighurst Center will cover room and board and the cost of an excursion in the area. Limited travel funds are available. 

The deadline for the submission of the proposals is November 1st. Please send a one page abstract (no more than 500 words) and one-page CVs to the havighurstcenter@miamioh.edu with the subject 2020YRCproposal.
