CFP: Gentry, Nobility, Aristocracy: The Post-feudal Perspectives (Warsaw)

The conference will take place in Warsaw at the Faculty of Modern Languages at the University of Warsaw (ul. Dobra 55) on 25-27 September 2024 in a hybrid format with possible online participation.

The vital and complex role of the landowning elites in the political, economic, and cultural history of Europe has been extensively researched, resulting in a wealth of literature. However, the question of how this role has been remembered since the dissolution of these elites as a social class, and what the implications of this memory and legacy are for contemporary European societies, has only recently been addressed by sociologists, historians, and anthropologists.

Thanks to generous funding from the Tarbell Family Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Endowment Fund of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of Sacramento, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to offer the continuation of the Hellenic Research Fellowship Program (HRFP) for a 12th year. The HRFP, the only residential fellowship program west of the Mississippi in Hellenic studies broadly conceived, enables visiting scholars to conduct research using the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection in Sacramento, CA. This year we are happy to inaugurate writer-in-residence fellowships as an addition to the Program. The HRFP provides a limited number of fellowships in the form of reimbursement to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred in connection with the awards. After 1989, the Western narrative of the triumph of free-market capitalism and liberal democracy spread rapidly, along with the promise of prosperity for more and more people. However, since the global crises from 2007 onward, it has become clear that the liberal vision of the end of history has not been realized. The economization of the former socialist states did not lead to an increase in living standards, on overage, these have declined significantly and were largely deindustrialized to the advantage of the leading economies. This has in many cases been associated with political crises and the rise of right-wing governments. Therefore, a renewed thinking about alternatives to the present organization of society gains once again actuality.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian Studies (Bucknell University)

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Bucknell University invites applications for a one-semester Visiting Assistant Professor position in Russian Studies for the Fall 2024 semester. The appointment begins August 1, 2024. The teaching load is 3 courses, which includes Russian language at all levels. We especially encourage applications from candidates interested in historically under-represented Slavic, East European, and Eurasian cultures. The successful candidate should possess native or near-native fluency in Russian and exhibit a demonstrated interest in inclusive pedagogies. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or be ABD in the area of Russian language and culture.

The search committee will begin to screen applications on April 22, 2024, and will continue to do so until the position is filled.

The application requires:
– a curriculum vitae
– a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s experience and potential as a teacher

CFP: Belarusian Visual Culture in the 21st Century

We are inviting essay submissions for an edited volume on contemporary visual culture of Belarus. The volume is projected to have 12-14 chapters (5000-6000 words each) on Belarusian visual culture divided in three parts: early 2000s, 2010s, and post-2020 visual culture. The volume is expected to have color illustrations and to feature interviews with contemporary artists, filmmakers, and cultural figures.

Submissions on all aspects of Belarusian visual culture are encouraged, including, but not limited to: art history; all aspects of visual arts and art spaces; photography; visual aspects of social media; television and media studies; theatre and cinema studies; dance studies; street art and folk art; protest visual culture and visual art as testimony; independent and official art.

Russian-Immersion Summer Jobs (Concordia Language Villages, Minnesota, US)

Option 1: Culinary Arts Staff, July 7-August 11 or July 7-August 18 – all levels
We are hiring for bakers, cooks, and assistant chefs. Staff will receive a week of training in food preparation specific to the cuisines of the Russian-speaking world and then be responsible for preparing the food under the supervision of the Village Chef. The language of the kitchen is English, but Culinary Arts staff are welcome to participate in the language immersion community when they are not cooking, which, given that it is a residential program, can easily be 4-5 hours/day. Room, board, and transportation from the Minneapolis airport to the program in Bemidji, MN are included, but staff are responsible for their own travel to the Minneapolis airport. Students who need work for the whole summer can indicate availability for one of the languages that runs in June, as well as the Russian village, for a full summer of employment.
