Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan & Arizona State University)

Nazarbayev University (NU) in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, in collaboration with Arizona State University, is pleased to announce our next session of the Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES), which will be an online, intensive summer language program in Kazakh (SSRES). The 8-week intensive course, which will be online for summer 2021, is fully FLAS compliant. 

Program dates for SSRES 2021:
June 7 – July 30 (8 weeks, equivalent of one academic year)  
American students are encouraged to apply to the program through Arizona State University’s Critical Language’s Institute, through which Title VIII funding is available (see more information below).  In addition, students applying through Arizona State University will earn US-based academic credits, workshops, and other program support.

Online Winter School in Russian Language and Culture (ITMO University, St. Petersburg)

Deadline: December 15, 2020

When?

The Winter School will last for 4 weeks: January 11 – February 5, 2021. Students can choose up to 4 weeks of education on offer.

How will the lessons be held?

Online studies are conducted in Zoom. Studies are held on business days and take 4 academic hours daily (1 academic hour is equal to 45 minutes). Each module lasts for one week (20 academic hours). The studies include practical lessons and entertaining extracurricular activities.

CFP: Contagion and Conflagration in Literature

“During the war people avidly read Tolstoy’s War and Peace as a means of testing their reactions.” So begins Lydia Ginzburg’s The Siege of Leningrad: Notes of a Survivor. Now that the very fiber of our social life has been upended by the pandemic, whose reverberations will be undoubtedly with us for many years to come, the journal Russian Literature proposes to again turn to books for insights on our common predicament. In the Petersburg of Osip Mandelstam’s The Egyptian Stamp, library books “are inhabited by measles, scarlatina, and chicken pox.” Indeed, classics of Russian and East European literature are swarming with infection and more often than not contagion mixes with political conflagration in their fevered collective consciousness. And, even before the era of Covid-19, contemporary literature and film became infested with scenarios in which viruses, both biological and digital, are unleashed, either intentionally or accidentally, by either the West or the East upon the world with catastrophic consequences.

Grad Program: English-Language Interdisciplinary History (Central European University, Austria)

The Department of History at Central European University (CEU) offers students interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives on history from the late medieval period to the present. It is recognized for its innovative approaches to research and teaching and as a center for outstanding research advancing comparative and transnational history on empirical and theoretical grounds. Our international faculty offers expertise that extends from early modern history to the comparative study of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century, as well as the post-communist period; from numerous aspects of social, cultural and intellectual history to comparative religious, visual and archival studies.

Funding and Graduate Summer Intensive Language Training, Info Sessions (Arizona State University)

From Critical Languages Institute (CLI), ASU Melikian Center:

We wanted especially to emphasize the opportunities for your graduate students (including current undergraduates who look to begin graduate school in fall 2021!) with US citizenship to study the less commonly taught languages of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. We will once again be able to offer 24 students Title VIII fellowships of up to $10,000. Students will earn up to 13 credit hours, including a 1-credit online graduate class specifically designed for Title VIII recipients. This course connects students in different language programs, provides comparative perspectives on the post-Soviet world, and builds professional capacities in communicating their expertise to audiences beyond their academic specialty. Languages currently eligible for Title VIII support are Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Polish, Russian (3rd year or higher), Ukrainian, and Uzbek.

Fully-Funded Academic Fellowships in Russia (American Councils)

Deadline (extended): February 15, 2021

Provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Councils Academic Fellowships in Russia program (AFR) will support U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars as they conduct research for three to nine consecutive months on topics within the social sciences disciplines in Russia. 

The total value of each fellowship ranges from $10,000 – $45,000, with actual level of support depending on the duration of the overseas research period and the academic rank of the awardee. Typical awards include: 

  • International airfare 
  • Academic affiliation with a leading local university or educational institution 
  • Visa(s) arranged by American Councils in collaboration with host institutions 
  • Housing and living stipends 
  • Health insurance 
  • Ongoing logistical support from American Councils

Acad. Job: Senior Lecturer in Russian (UT San Antonio)

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at The University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for a non-tenure-track Senior Lecturer in Russian starting Fall 2021. This is a full-time position with a three-year renewable contract. Beginning Fall 2021, Senior Lecturers at UTSA will be redesignated as Associate Professors of Instruction.

Responsibilities:

Teaching a variety of Russian language, literature, and culture courses in the Modern Language Studies B.A. program.  Leadership in development of the Russian curriculum.  Application of the latest foreign language methods and technologies to language teaching.
