Abstracts are invited for a proposed collection on Literary Journalism/
Creative Non-Fiction in East-Central Europe. The volume takes as its central
concern the current shapes and forms of what is variously called literary
journalism, creative non-fiction, creative documentary narrative, or reportage
(among other terms) in the region. We have already received preliminary
interest from an academic publisher.

Job: Slavic Language Cataloging Librarian (Princeton University)

Princeton University Library (PUL) seeks candidates for the Slavic Language Cataloging Librarian position. The position reports to the Leader of the Western Languages Cataloging Team and actively supports the teaching and research mission of Princeton University by providing timely and accurate access to PUL collections through the creation and maintenance of bibliographic, holdings, and authority records for all the resources in Slavic languages. The position serves as the primary cataloger for Slavic language material (in all formats) in the Cataloging and Metadata Services department and engages in the full spectrum of activities relating to the creation and management of metadata for Library materials in Slavic languages.Primary Responsibilities: *Create metadata (original and copy cataloging plus related authority work) according to national and local standards for newly acquired resources, primarily in Slavic languages, as well as for other Library material in various formats and subject areas based on department needs. *Update and enhance existing metadata according to national and local standards to reflect the most recent metadata rules, and practices for monographic and serial publications in both OCLC Connexion Client and the Library’s local database. *Participate in professional activities, scholarship, and committee assignments within the Library, on campus, and in professional associations at a level to meet criteria for continuing appointment. *Assist with special projects, as assigned, and collaborate with colleagues on issues related to cataloging, resource description, and access. *Maintain current knowledge of national and international developments and trends in cataloging, metadata, and related areas.

Graduate Funding: CESSI 2024 Supplemental Title VIII Fellowship Competition

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has opened a supplemental competition for Title VIII Fellowships in support of this year’s Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI). Applications will be accepted until April 24, 2024.

Graduate students (including those beginning a graduate program this fall), post-baccalaureate researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for the Title VIII Fellowship, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,870 for the summer. This is a great opportunity for incoming MA and PhD students to develop language skills before embarking on fieldwork.

After 1989, the Western narrative of the triumph of free-market capitalism and liberal democracy spread rapidly, along with the promise of prosperity for more and more people. However, since the global crises from 2007 onward, it has become clear that the liberal vision of the end of history has not been realized. The economization of the former socialist states did not lead to an increase in living standards, on overage, these have declined significantly and were largely deindustrialized to the advantage of the leading economies. This has in many cases been associated with political crises and the rise of right-wing governments. Therefore, a renewed thinking about alternatives to the present organization of society gains once again actuality.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian Studies (Bucknell University)

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Bucknell University invites applications for a one-semester Visiting Assistant Professor position in Russian Studies for the Fall 2024 semester. The appointment begins August 1, 2024. The teaching load is 3 courses, which includes Russian language at all levels. We especially encourage applications from candidates interested in historically under-represented Slavic, East European, and Eurasian cultures. The successful candidate should possess native or near-native fluency in Russian and exhibit a demonstrated interest in inclusive pedagogies. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or be ABD in the area of Russian language and culture.

The search committee will begin to screen applications on April 22, 2024, and will continue to do so until the position is filled.

– a curriculum vitae
– a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s experience and potential as a teacher

Russian-Immersion Summer Jobs (Concordia Language Villages, Minnesota, US)

Option 1: Culinary Arts Staff, July 7-August 11 or July 7-August 18 – all levels
We are hiring for bakers, cooks, and assistant chefs. Staff will receive a week of training in food preparation specific to the cuisines of the Russian-speaking world and then be responsible for preparing the food under the supervision of the Village Chef. The language of the kitchen is English, but Culinary Arts staff are welcome to participate in the language immersion community when they are not cooking, which, given that it is a residential program, can easily be 4-5 hours/day. Room, board, and transportation from the Minneapolis airport to the program in Bemidji, MN are included, but staff are responsible for their own travel to the Minneapolis airport. Students who need work for the whole summer can indicate availability for one of the languages that runs in June, as well as the Russian village, for a full summer of employment.

Conference: 2024 Annual North East Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (NESEEES)

The 2024 Annual North East Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (NESEEES) Conference will take place on Saturday, April 6, at New York University’s Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia (19 University Place, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10003).

All are welcome.  The registration fee ($40 for general conference registration, with a reduced rate of $25 for students) can be paid by bringing cash or check to the conference on the morning of April 6th.  Within a few days, the program will also have a link for paying online.
