Acad. Job: Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream – CLTA – Polish Language, Literature & Culture (University of Toronto)

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Polish Language, Literature and Culture beginning July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter, and ending on June 30, 2025.
 

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Polish Culture or a related field by the time of appointment. The candidate must show excellence in teaching the Polish language, literature and culture at a North American university. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching‐related scholarly activities. Excellent (native or near-native) knowledge of Polish and English is required, as well as knowledge of current teaching methodologies, culture-based instruction, and use of technology.

Funding: Vartan Gregorian Research Grants (IIE Scholar Rescue Fund)

We would like to remind you of the February 15th deadline for the Vartan Gregorian Research Grants in the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund.

The IIE-SRF Vartan Gregorian Research Grants were launched in honor and memory of Dr. Vartan Gregorian’s lifelong work to promote global peace, expand access to international education, and preserve the lives and work of threatened scholars, as well as his service on the IIE Board of Trustees. Around 4 IIE-SRF partners will be selected to receive grants of up to $25,000 that will help fund original research or other projects that deepen our knowledge of the threats faced by academics in diverse contexts across the globe and/or that explore innovative ideas for supporting these scholars. IIE-SRF welcomes proposals that broadly explore the displacement of academics or attacks on higher education and scholarly inquiry worldwide, including the factors that lead to such attacks or their effects. Relevant issues include those in the context of targeted threats against academia and academics or protracted conflict and higher education emergencies.

Conference: Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia (Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey)

The Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey welcomes applications for the sixth Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia (MSSR). MSSR 2022 will be held online from July 6 – 29. 

We welcome applications from your best graduate students. Advanced Russian language skills are required. English and Russian are the working languages of the MSSR. The Symposium is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York.

In the December 1905 issue of Novaia zhizn’, the Bolshevik daily newspaper, Vladimir Lenin wrote: “The proletariat of today takes the side of socialism, which enlists science in the battle against the fog of religion, and frees the workers from their belief in life after death by welding them together to fight in the present for a better life on earth.” In the years following the 1917 Revolution, the Soviet regime launched an aggressive campaign against religion, hoping to lift the “fog” identified by Lenin. Through powerful and sometimes disturbing imagery, targeted poster campaigns warned people of the dangers of religion and ultimately, the dangers of living in the past. Soviet iconoclasm paved the way for the destruction, not only of religious images, but of an entire political, social, and cultural system.

Funding: REEI Summer Russian Scholarship (University of Indiana)

The R. F. Byrnes Russian and East European Institute (REEI) of Indiana University (IU) offers the REEI Summer Russian Scholarship in support of first-generation undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in Russian-language study at their home institutions. Applications are accepted from both IU students as well as those at other US colleges and universities. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who meet the following criteria: 1) current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program; 2) current enrollment in a course of Russian language study at an institute of higher education; 3) enrollment in an 8-week course of study in Russian at the IU Language Workshop in 2022; 4) child of parents/guardians who have not received an education degree beyond a high school diploma or GED. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and mandatory fees (currently valued at $3533). Deadline for applications: February 28, 2022.

The Amherst College Department of Russian invites applications for a full-time two-year visiting appointment at the rank of visiting assistant professor, which will begin on July 1, 2022. We are looking for a broadly-trained, theoretically-engaged scholar of Russian literature and culture committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal-arts context. Teaching responsibilities include two courses per semester, including all levels of Russian language and various aspects of Russia’s cultural legacy, as well as advising senior theses, as necessary.

Lang. Training: Azerbaijani Summer Institute (University of Illinois)

2nd year Azerbaijani will now be offered through the University of Illinois Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) program!

Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim world (SILMW) is a program offered by the Less Commonly Taught Languages Program at the University of Illinois since 2008. SILMW provides a unique opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of the Muslim World while interacting with experts on the region. In addition to classroom instruction, SILMW offers a variety of extra-curricular learning activities designed to enhance and enrich the language learning process, provides additional channels for language contact, and exposes students to the traditions of the communities of the Muslim World.

The institute is held annually at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. Classes take place during the Summer semester. University students earn between 4 and 10 credit hours for taking one or two intensive language courses over the period of 4-8 weeks. SILMW offers exciting opportunities to immerse in the target language through up to 4 hours of daily class instruction and daily co-corricular activities, including research forums, conversation tables, cooking classes, film series, field trips and so much more! Proficiency in any language endorsed by SILMW program presents a competitive advantage in the modern day job market.

1) Program Assistant – CT (6/23 – 8/6/22)

PA will be responsible for supervising participants (ages 9-15 yrs) as well as running extracurricular/ non-ballet activities (outdoor games, arts & crafts, etc.). PAs will work as a team of 3-4 and will report to the Program Director. This position is well-suited for candidates with strong academic or career interests in: performing arts, global languages/cultures (especially Russian), sports medicine, and/or child education.

REQUIRED: Residency on campus (single AC rooms), experience with overseeing youth.

BENEFITS: $3000-3,500 for the period (combination of wages/bonuses), housing & meals, 5 days off.
