Language Training: Summer Language Study (ASU Critical Languages Institute)

The Critical Languages Institute at Arizona State University’s Melikian Center is accepting applications for its 2018 summer language programs in the U.S. and abroad.

CLI offers intensive courses in less commonly taught languages in the U.S. and overseas. CLI students pay a flat fee of $1,500 for up to 13 semester credits, in addition to study-abroad fees if they opt to study overseas.

Generous scholarships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-students:

– Department of State Title VIII Fellowships for selected languages

– ROTC Project GO Scholarships for selected languages

– Melikian Scholarships for all languages

– Language-specific support for several languages

CFP: 2018 Midwest Slavic Conference (OSU)

The Midwest Slavic Association and The Ohio State University (OSU) Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) are pleased to announce the 2018 Midwest Slavic Conference to be held at OSU March 23-25, 2018. Conference organizers invite proposals for panels or individual papers addressing all topics related to Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and Southeastern Europe. The conference will open with a keynote address by Tara Zahra based on her latest book The Great Departure: Mass Migration from Eastern Europe and the Making of the Free World, on Friday, March 23rd. Two days of panels will follow the keynote address.

Building on the title of the keynote address, this year we also invite interdisciplinary papers or panels that focus on migration from historical or contemporary perspectives. The Conference will open with a plenary panel “Borders, Barriers, and Belonging: A Spotlight on Global Migration” on Saturday morning that will feature five migration experts who will discuss mobility in five world regions. There will also be a lunchtime lecture sponsored by the Slovene Research Initiative featuring Michael Biggins on Slavic literary translation.

Please send a one-paragraph abstract and a brief C.V. in a single PDF format to csees@osu.edu by January 16th. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate. Prepaid lodging is available for undergraduate and graduate students presenters. A block of rooms is available at a discounted rate for all other participants. Study Abroad: Trans-Siberian Program (U of New Hampshire)

What is the program?

The UNH Russia Program is a unique summer study abroad opportunity for all interested students to experience first-hand the vastness of Russia. Students travel with UNH faculty and study Russian language, culture, and history with stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a trip across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! Visits include cultural, historical, and political venues (including the Duma, Kremlin, Hermitage, WWII bunker, Gulag Museum, Tatar hat workshop, hiking around Lake Baikal, participate in traditional Russian folk wedding, Lenin’s house in Gorki, banya, Russo-Japanese war fortresses and bunkers in Vladivostok) with readings and discussion at each site.
 
4 Week and 8 Week Programs
 
4 Week program: Earn 8 UNH credits studying culture and history while traveling to St. Petersburg, Moscow and on to Siberia, with stops in Kazan, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Arshan (a village in Buryatiya) and ending in Vladivostok. No prior study of Russian language is required. Survival Russian included in pre-departure and in-country work. All students with an interest in Russian history, politics and culture should apply. Tentative program dates: May 23-June 25.
 
8 Week program: After the above 4 weeks of travel, students stay in Moscow and have language classes taught by faculty from Language Link. Earn an addition 8 credits studying Russian language (grammar, conversation and phonetics at the appropriate level with 4 additional hours a week of conversational work.) These credits are issued by Language Link.Tentative program dates: May 23-July 23.
 
Pre-departure orientation sessions (via Skype) and pre-departure assignments (reading, lectures and work done on-line with a UNH faculty member.) 
Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the full expanse of Russia!

The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University is now accepting applications for its 2018-2019 Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies.

The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University is currently accepting applications for its research fellowships for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applications from interested individuals must be submitted by January 15, 2018 through the online application form on HURI’s website.

HURI’s fellowship program supports distinguished scholars from around the world to carry out research in residence on topics pertaining to Ukrainian Studies. While at HURI, they can connect with experts, attend lectures and other events with world-renowned speakers, and make use of the resources at Harvard University, including its vast library collections.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the following fellowships are offered:

  • The Jaroslaw and Nadia Mihaychuk Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
  • The HURI/Ukrainian Studies Fund Research Fellowships (mid-career)
  • The Petro Jacyk Distinguished Fellowship (senior)

Fellows receive a monthly stipend to assist with the cost of housing, health insurance, and living expenses. The fellowships also provide direct roundtrip travel to Harvard University.

Eligibility: Individuals must have demonstrated a commitment to Ukrainian Studies and hold a doctorate in history, literature, philology, culture, or a related area of study in the humanities and social sciences fields.

Nominations for the Jacyk fellowship may also be submitted.

Advance your Russian-language skills while exploring Georgian culture, history, literature, and film, including Georgia’s longstanding cultural and political relationship with Russia. The ancient capital city of Tbilisi, which is rapidly developing itself for the twenty-first century, offers a distinctive and fascinating site for continuing your Russian-language learning. You’ll also take several trips within Georgia – to Mtskheta, Davit Gareja, Gori, Borjomi, Batumi, and Kazbegi — to gain a deeper understanding of the Georgian nation and its regional context. Students can use their Russian in hands-on situations with a Russian theatrical troupe and in opportunities to participate in an archaeological dig.

Competition: Machine Learning (Moscow)

For students who combine an interest in data with an interest in Russia, this could be a very enriching experience. Students interested in math and computer sciences are invited to participate in the first ever international contest in Data Analysis.

The IDAO (International Data Analysis Olympiad), created by leading experts in data analysis for their future colleagues, aims to bring together analysts, scientists, professionals, and junior researchers from all over the world on a single platform. This is the first time an event of this scale will be held in Russia. The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, Yandex and Harbour. Space University organize the Olympiad with the support of Sverbank.

Graduate Programs: MA & PhD (University of Virginia)

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Virginia welcomes applications for three graduate programs, the MA in Contemporary Russian Studies, the MA in Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the MA+PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures. The
MA in Contemporary Russian Studies offers courses in Russian literature, language, culture, history, politics, art history, religious studies, and sociology, as well as further study in advanced
Russian language. The MA and MA+PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures train scholars primarily in Russian literature and culture. At the PhD level students take secondary offerings in Polish language and Polish and Central European literature. Students may also take courses in related areas in other language departments, English, History, and Religious Studies, among many others.

Contested Bodies: Identities and Spaces in Post-Soviet Territories

What does it mean to be a ‘post-Soviet person’ today? The Soviet Union was created and held together on the premise that the power of class consciousness could create a community that transcends the limitations of ethnicity and language. The events of 1991 shattered this illusion. As the USSR dissolved, newly created states and people across the post-Soviet space were left with the task of figuring out who they were and to what country, body politic, language, and culture they belonged. In the early post-Soviet years, this process was manifested in social violence in the form of armed conflicts in Georgia and Moldova, the expulsion of Russian nationals from Central Asian states, and criminal infighting over the privatization of former Soviet industrial complexes. As time passed, however, it began to seem that the people and states of the region were embarking on an era of peaceful co-existence, built on shared recognition of their common history and present situation in the world.

Program Liaisons are an integral part of the BBA Short Term International Programs (BBA SIP) and are responsible for assisting the BBA SIP Program Coordinator and faculty leader(s) in delivering study abroad programs that meet the academic and cultural objectives of the BBA International Programs Office.

Purpose of the Position: One liaison will be hired to assist with the implementation and assessment of either the Management Program in Prague (or) International Accounting Program in Prague. The program liaison will handle administrative work associated with the program, serve as an on-site program coordinator, and act as a cultural ambassador. As part of this responsibility, the liaison will work closely with BBA IP staff, faculty leaders, and partner university administrators.
