We announce the first call for papers for the Slavic Cognitive Linguistics Conference (SCLC-2020), the 17th conference of the Slavic Cognitive Linguistics Association (SCLA). The conference will take place on December 4-6, 2020 at UiT The Arctic University of Tromsø in Tromsø, Norway.
The confirmed invited speaker is Martin Haspelmath (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History).
We invite abstracts for 20+10 min presentations on any topic of relevance to Slavic Cognitive Linguistics. Abstracts should be based on work that has not yet been published. We especially encourage submissions from young researchers. Abstracts can be written in English or in any Slavic language. Abstracts should not be longer than 500 words, including references. Please refrain from any self-identification in the body of the abstract. Each individual may be involved in a maximum of two abstracts (maximum one as sole author). The deadline for abstract submission is May 22, 2020. Authors will be notified of acceptance / rejection by June 30, 2020.

This 7-day seminar in digital humanities research methods is designed to expose a new generation of scholars in Cold War history and culture to methods of analysis and discovery involving computational techniques. Designed and run by NEP4DISSENT (New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent, nep4dissent.eu), COST Action 16213, the inspiration for the course is built around the transfer of knowledge from technologists and data scientists to humanists. In the course of the 7-day session the participants will have hands-on experience with the entire life cycle of a digital humanities project design, leading to a single, tangible outcome in the form of a fully searchable and interactive dataset usable for art-curatorial purposes. Faculty are drawn from several disciplines and areas of specialization, in close cooperation with: the Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA); the History Department at CEU; the Department of Network and Data Science at CEU; the Department of Hungarian Literature and Cultural Studies at ELTE; the COURAGE H2020 project; the Center for Digital Humanities at the Institute of Literary Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences (CHC); CLARIN-Poland; the Center for Digital History at the University of Luxembourg (C2DH) ; and the LAB1100 in The Hague.

Our intensive Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) program allows (if interested) our participants to acquire a highly marketable skill set, becoming proficient in both GPR systems (250MHz and 500MHz) and configurations used in near subsurface investigations, in both rough terrain and cart configurations. The field component will allow them to explore the Roman town of Micia as well as a collapsed medieval castle, in two fundamentally different environments.
Our participants will not only explore the archaeology of the region, but will have the opportunity to sample the magic of Transylvania, through its amazing historical and natural landscapes.
Our programs are available for both credit students and non-credit participants.
Our program offers a very extensive approach to the anthropology and archaeology of the Roman frontier environments, respectively the northern Dacian Provinces (i.e. modern historical Transylvania, Romania), through field work, laboratory analysis and lectures. The integrated outcomes of our various approaches have yielded extraordinary results: a palatial size villa with a rural built space of ca. one hectare, surrounded by massive fortification walls decorated with exterior frescoes, richly built two-story buildings containing exceptional artifacts (well preserved bronze statues, jewelry, mint condition coins, writing implements, etc.). Our target excavation, the “central building” of the villa, has already presented us with a very complex and surprising occupation sequence and living practices. Local Roman Provincial realities, born out of economic, cultural, social and political creolization, constant and dynamic negotiation of power, and shifting populations have outlived the ideological centers that have claimed historical ownership of these regions, creating their own distinct expressions of identity.

Please find below the CFP for the Central Slavic Conference. Discerning eyes will note that it has been moved for this coming year to a new slot in the spring. Otherwise, its favored location (Missouri Athletic Club in STL) and its emphasis on serving not only “traditional” scholars, but also graduate students and independent scholars remains strong. We are also proud to provide 1-2 panels for undergraduate participation.

The Central Slavic Conference is pleased to invite scholars of all disciplines working in Slavic, Eurasian, and East European studies to submit proposals for panels, individual papers, and roundtables at its annual meeting at the historic Missouri Athletic Club and Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Friday, Feb. 28th-Sunday, March 1st, 2020.
Founded in 1962 as the Bi-State Slavic Conference, the Central Slavic Conference now encompasses seven states and is the oldest of the regional affiliates of ASEEES (Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies). Scholars from outside the region and from around the world are welcome.
