The successful hire will teach primarily first and second-year classes in and adjacent to their area(s) of specialty, three classes per semester, approximately 25 students per course. One upper level course per year. Possible courses—depending on disciplinary background—include things such as Reading Literature and Culture, Introduction to the Study of Religion, Topics in United States History, Introduction to Japanese Art History; Introduction to Cinema Studies, etc. We welcome interdisciplinary scholars, and individuals whose courses might contribute to any of our cross-disciplinary programs.

Sustaining Ukrainian Scholarship

The New Europe College (NEC Bucharest) and the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS Sofia) announce a Call for Applications for their joint programme to support scholars from the regions affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine (Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Moldova, etc.). The programme is aimed at qualified researchers (post-doctoral level) in the humanities and the social sciences, including law and economics, who intend to pursue a project of their own choosing. The selected applicants will have the opportunity to spend an extended period (ideally one or two semesters, between October 2023 and July 2024) as Fellows, resident in either Bucharest or Sofia, where they will enjoy all the benefits associated with a fellowship (stipend, accommodation, academic and administrative assistance, integration into international academic networks).

Queen Mary University of London and the British Library are pleased to announce the availability of a fully funded Collaborative Doctoral Studentship from 1 October 2023 under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme.

This doctoral project seeks to advance postcolonial discourse in East European studies by focusing on the British Library’s unique Belarusian collection, the history of its development during the Cold War, and the collection’s evolution in response to Belarus’ ‘decolonising moment’ as it broke out of the Soviet fold in 1991.

This project will be jointly supervised by Dr Natalya Chernyshova (School of History) and Prof Jeremy Hicks (Department of Modern Languages and Cultures) at Queen Mary University of London and by Dr Katie McElvanney, Dr Katya Rogatchevskaia, and Dr Olga Topol at the British Library. The student will spend time with both QMUL and the British Library and will become part of the wider cohort of AHRC CDP funded PhD students across the UK.

QMUL and the British Library are keen to encourage applications from the widest range of candidates and particularly welcome those currently underrepresented in doctoral student cohorts.

The Domaine Slavistique of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) is looking for a PhD student to work on a research project on the intellectual and cultural history of the Ukrainian émigré community in interwar Prague.

Project background

You will be involved in the SNF-funded project “Communities of Dialogue: Russian and Ukrainian Émigrés in Modernist Prague”, led by Dr. Patrick Flack (full details: https://comdial.sdvipress.org). The project explores the concrete intellectual entanglements of the Russian and Ukrainian émigré communities in Prague during the interwar period (1918-1938) and clarifies the modalities of their participation in both Prague modernism and the European human sciences. Specifically, it investigates the forms of institutional and personal cooperation through which Russian and Ukrainian émigrés organised their own communities and shaped modernist Prague, focussing on the collaborative activities of key mediating figures. The project aims to deliver a new picture of interwar Prague, redefining the role of intercultural dialogue between specific traditions in its development as a European centre of modernism and human sciences. It provides a major contribution to research on Russian emigration in one of its least studied centres, as well as a new study of the intellectual impact of Ukrainian émigrés in Prague. Further, it explores comparatively the links between exile, political identity and intellectual cultures in the interwar period.

The position will begin in the autumn of 2023 at an agreed-upon date.

The Billington Fellowship was established in 2016 in tribute to the co-founder of the Kennan Institute, Director Emeritus of the Wilson Center, and Librarian Emeritus of Congress, James H. Billington. Dr. Billington has made enduring contributions to the field of Russian Studies, and in our nation’s ability to understand and maintain bridges of dialogue with the Russian people. He is not only the author of The Icon and the Axe (1966), Fire in the Minds of Men (1980), and Russia in Search of Itself (2004), among other seminal works; he is the visionary behind the Open World Leadership Center, which has facilitated the travel of over 24,000 individuals from Eurasia to the United States to meet with members of Congress and visit across the United States.

Residential Fellowships for Displaced Ukrainian Scholars (Purdue University)

Purdue University has decided to offer additional research opportunities for Ukrainian scholars displaced by the Russian invasion. Visiting scholars can be individuals with faculty positions at Ukrainian universities engaged in academic research or students enrolled in doctoral programs at Ukrainian universities who are engaged in dissertation research. Only individuals will be invited. Dependents will not be able to be hosted due to housing limitations. Accepted scholars will not be enrolled in degree programs but will rather engage in their own research or support research already being conducted by a Purdue faculty member.
