Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP)

TUTOR/ACTIVITY GUIDE — Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian
Position Dates: June 10 – August 7, 2019

The Tutor, under the direct supervision of the Language Coordinator, assists SILP students in their academic coursework outside of class (approximately 10 hours/week).

Qualifications:

  • Advanced fluency (Advanced Low or above) in the target language
  • Experience tutoring and/or working with foreign language learners
  • B.A. with a foreign language major or equivalent preferred
  • M.A. in foreign language teaching in progress preferred

Job Summary:
Oversees day-to-day operations of the Language Workshop in compliance with IU and federal policies and procedures, with an emphasis on student-facing activities, logistics and financial oversight, and management of externally funded projects as assigned.

As Program Coordinator, bears primary responsibility for student management, course scheduling, scholarship and fellowship administration. Assists students during admission, testing, and enrollment. Provides advising for students, parents, and participants in Workshop programs. Schedules on-campus and online courses. The American English Program has been helping Vladimir residents to learn English since 1992 and currently has more than 600 students each semester who are taught by 10 American and 4 Russian teachers.

PROGRAM BENEFITS: monthly stipend, room and board with a Russian family, three hours per week of one-to-one Russian lessons with experienced instructors, thorough teacher orientation and ongoing teaching support from 2 full-time teacher supervisors, textbooks customized specifically for the program, a pleasant and well-equipped teaching environment, full Russian visa application support, complete on-site administrative support from an excellent Russian staff, and much more.

TEACHER OBLIGATIONS: Plan and teach four (possibly 5) 1½ hour classes that meet twice a week, hold office hours, present a brief “Saturday lecture” on any aspect of American culture, airfare to and from Moscow, visa fee, obtain TESOL certification.

Russian Life magazine seeks a Digital Editor intern to curate and compile its weekly e-letter, The Weekly Russia File, and to play an active role in the magazine’s growing digital footprint.

Requirements:

  • Superb English writing skills (native English).
  • Ability to write succinctly, quippily, and knowledgeably about Russian culture (with little or no need for style editor intervention).
  • At least intermediate Russian reading ability.
  • Excellent online search, fact-checking, and news survey skills.
  • Excellent sense of humor and a taste for offbeat, under-the-radar news.
  • Basic HTML skills and comfort with CMS and online blog editing systems, including image manipulation, or willingness to gain this skill.
