Academic Job: University of Alberta Visiting Professorship

Stuart Ramsay Tompkins Visiting Professorship

Applications are invited for the position of Stuart Ramsay Tompkins Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This is a nine-month appointment to be held jointly in the Departments of History and Classics, and Modern Languages and Cultural Studies (MLCS, home department for the appointee). The Visiting Professor will be expected to be in residence from August 26, 2019 to May 29, 2020, and will also be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the sponsoring departments.

The successful candidate will teach two one-term courses during the year in the area of expertise (available to students in either department), and give a minimum of two public lectures throughout the year. It is anticipated that the appointee will hold regular consultations with graduate students in related fields throughout the stay and serve as an ambassador for the program upon returning home.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for the position of Director of the Slovak Studies Program, pending budgetary approval. This appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer; the initial appointment is for one year, followed by a three-year renewable term. Duties include:

  • Teaching  beginning, intermediate, and advanced Slovak language, as well as Slovak or Slovak-comparative literature and culture at the undergraduate level.
  • Non-teaching duties include oversight of Slovak cultural and outreach activities.
  • Scholarly publication and active participation in national professional associations is encouraged, but is not a prerequisite for appointment or renewal.

Job: Summer Camp Counselor (Bemidji, MN)

Concordia Language Villages’ summer Russian immersion program “Лесное озеро” is actively recruiting a diverse pool for positions as counselors in our residential program for kids ages 6-18, for July 8 – August 11, 2018 in Bemidji, MN.

Counselors teach Russian language and culture in an informal program with extensive mentoring and support, and also lead “camp”-type activities (canoeing, art, etc.) and supervise cabins. These positions are appropriate for those with abundant energy and a dedication to and background in work with children and teens. They do not require teaching experience, as we expect to provide these staff with intensive teacher training, a very thorough curriculum, and in-service support. We anticipate that we will have a particular need for applicants with experience in outdoor skills/nature/ecology, folk art, guitar/balalaika/domra, Central Asia and/or the Caucuses. Academic Job: Summer Russian Instructor (ASU CLI)

Arizona State University seeks a faculty associate to teach intensive Russian in its 2019 summer Critical Languages Institute. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching independently, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidates will teach Russian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming.

Academic Job: Visiting Prof. Ukrainian Studies (Columbia Uni.)

Visiting Professor in Ukrainian Studies, Open Rank, 2019-2020 (one semester)

Columbia University invites applications for an appointment in Ukrainian studies to be filled at the rank of assistant, associate, or full visiting professor for one semester (fall or spring) in the academic year 2019-2020. Rank commensurate with experience. Ph.D. or equivalent is required. History is the preferred area of research and teaching specialization, but literary/cultural studies and other areas will also be considered. The successful candidate will be appointed in one of the Humanities or Social Science Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and will teach two courses: a course of broad interest for upper-level undergraduates and a second course for graduate students. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to give one public lecture and to participate in the academic life of the University, including as an affiliate of the Harriman Institute.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three persons who may be asked to provide a letter of reference, a modest sample (article or book or dissertation chapter) of scholarship, and past teaching evaluations, if available. Diplomatic Security Special Agents are specially trained Foreign Service security professionals; they are also sworn Federal law enforcement officers. Special Agents who serve overseas as the Regional Security Officer advise ambassadors on all security matters and manage a complex range of security programs designed to protect personnel, facilities, and information. In the United States, Special Agents protect the Secretary of State and visiting foreign dignitaries, investigate passport and visa fraud, and conduct personnel security investigations.

Call for Proposals FOR Partnership Grants

Purpose of Grants: Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, five grants will be awarded to U.S. universities to establish partnerships between faculty and administrators at U.S. and Kazakhstani universities or advance current U.S. and Kazakhstani collaborations in higher education. Administered by American Councils for International Education, the grants will support direct travel, honoraria, materials, and conference fees for faculty or administrators in the U.S. and Kazakhstan. Grants are intended to support institutional capacity building, professional development for administrators, joint curriculum and co-curriculum, joint faculty research, student exchanges, and other new areas of collaboration.
