Advanced Russian Language Seminar (London)

The Society for Co-operation in Russian & Soviet Studies (SCRSS) would like to draw your attention to their 2020 seminar, organised in collaboration with the St Petersburg Association for International Co-operation, which may be of interest to both teachers and students. The programme includes four 70-minute lectures per day, all in Russian, on Russian linguistics and ‘stranovedenie’ topics. The two speakers are senior lecturers from St Petersburg, invited specially for this seminar. Resource: GRINT Centre App for Learning Russian

SemesterRus is a free app designed by the GRINT Centre for learning Russian and preparing for the TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) at the Elementary, Basic, and First Certification levels. It includes 60 lessons (3 levels, with 20 lessons in each level, using a standard structure and design) and preparatory Russian language exams for each TORFL level using the in-app Dictionary and flashcards. The app is free to use for every learner from beginning to advanced, and does not include ads or in-app purchases.

Assessments for the Grammar, Reading, and Listening sections are carried out automatically within the app. Instructors from the GRINT Centre will individually grade the Writing and Speaking sections. Any final evaluation scores from the Exams section of the app will be available within 48 hours after completing the test.

Grad. Program/ Language Training: Ukrainian Summer Institute (Harvard University)

June 20–August 8, 2020

The 2020 Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute offers unique courses in Ukrainian studies taught by Harvard and visiting faculty. These courses are intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates who are concentrating in Ukrainian studies or who wish to broaden their educational experience. Students intending to participate in the HUSI program are asked to submit a HUSI enrollment form. Students must also complete the Harvard Summer School registration process and enroll in the classes they intend to take as part of HUSI.

Tuition for HUSI is commensurate with tuition rates charged for all other Harvard Summer School courses. Tuition for 2020 and the cost of on-campus room and board are posted on the Harvard Summer School website. 

Applicants may register for 8 or 4 credits to participate in the program. Applicants seeking the I-20 certificate for the student F-1 US visa must register for 8 credits.

Lang. Training/Internship: Ukrainian Museum Archives (Pittsburgh/Cleveland)

1st-year Ukrainian classes taught at the SLI provide the equivalent of an academic year’s worth of study. Classes meet on the University of Pittsburgh campus Monday – Friday from 9am to 3pm. In addition to intensive language classes, students attend Ukrainian films, lectures, and other activities centering on Ukrainian art, food, and culture.

Post-SLI Internship Opportunity for 6-Week Ukrainian Students
SLI is pleased to announce that during the summer of 2020, we are partnering with the Ukrainian Museum-Archives in Cleveland, Ohio to offer a limited number of internships to SLI-Ukrainian students. Students who apply and are accepted to the internship would work at the museum-archives on a project that makes direct use of their newly-acquired knowledge of Ukrainian. Students would also have the opportunity to use the vast resources of the archives to complete a research project related to their academic or career interests. This internship must be taken for academic credit and would commence immediately after the completion of the 6-week beginning Ukrainian course in Pittsburgh. The number of credits taken and the duration of the internship would be negotiated between the applicant, SLI, and the director and curator at the museum-archives. Lang. Training: Summer, Academic Year Russian Immersion Programs (Moscow)

Dickinson College is now accepting applications for the 2020 Summer Immersion Program—an intensive five-week language and culture course in Moscow and St. Petersburg—and for the Dickinson-in-Moscow Program for Fall 2020 and Academic Year 2020-2021. 

Summer Immersion Program (May 22 – June 27, 2020):

Lang. Training/Study Abroad/Funding: Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (Wisconsin/Azerbaijan)

In 2020, Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants have the opportunity to study Turkish as part in the Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI). Boren Scholars and Fellows selected for this initiative will receive funding for intensive language study and cultural immersion, beginning with a summer 2020 domestic program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an overseas program in Baku, Azerbaijan.   • Summer Program: The summer domestic programs will be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, through the Arabic, Persian & Turkish Language Institute. APTLI begins on June 15 – August 7, 2020. Please see the program website for more information for students: https://aptli.wisc.edu
  • Overseas Program: The fall overseas programs will take place at the Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL) centers in Baku, Azerbaijan. Dates for the overseas programs are yet to be confirmed. This program will be administered by American Councils and UW-Madison jointly. Students will be considered UW-Madison students for the duration of the overseas programs.
  • Language Level: The TURFLI program is appropriate for applicants with no language proficiency, as well as those with intermediate or advanced proficiency in Turkish.
  • Application: The applications for the 2020 Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available at www.borenawards.org. 
  • Undergraduate deadline: February 5, 2020
  • Graduate deadline is: January 29, 2020

Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.

The 2020 Indiana University Language Workshop is accepting applications for intensive study of Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Ukrainian,
Hungarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Turkmen, Uzbek, and 13 other languages.

Fellowships and scholarships are available for graduate students, undergraduate students, and lifelong learners.
All participants pay in-state tuition. Graduate credit is available for most courses.

Lang. Training/Resource: Reality Czech Online Textbook and Curriculum (UT Austin)

Reality Czech is a next generation openly licensed Czech textbook and curriculum currently under development by Dr. Christian Hilchey from the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies in collaboration with the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) at the University of Texas at Austin.

All materials will be freely available online under a Creative Commons license to any university or individuals who wish to use or adapt them.
