Study Abroad: Intensive Russian Program (Vladimir, Russia)

The American Home has proudly offered intensive Russian courses for foreigners for many years now. Our qualified and experienced instructors, Tanya Akimova and Nelli Mukhammadieva have many years of experience in teaching Russian to foreign students. Our students live with host families here in the ancient city of Vladimir, and can fully immerse themselves in both the Russian language and culture.

Dates: Open May 1—August 30 (although fall and winter dates are possible)

Signup: At least three months prior to departure with a $500 deposit required.
Balance due at least 30 days prior to departure.

The benefits of the American Home’s long-standing Intensive Russian Program – the main program offers one-to-one instruction to each participant – are provided to group participants:
  • Experienced faculty specializing in teaching Russian to non-native speakers
  • Program and schedule customized to the needs of each group of students
  • Study from one week to one year
  • Individual home-stay with a Russian family (2 meals a day)
  • “Russian friend-conversation partner” program
  • On-site administrative support
  • Well-equipped classrooms in a comfortable, home-like, atmosphere
  • Intensive, one-on-one or small group lessons 3 hours a day/5 days a week
  • Excursions in Vladimir and to Suzdal (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and Bogoliubovo
  • Opportunities to meet and socialize with some of the more than 400 Russians
    participating in the American Home English Program and others
  • Opportunities to participate in a variety of activities—for example, volunteering at an
    orphanage

Travel: American Home’s Alternative Spring Break in Russia (Vladimir/Murom, Russia)

Participants do not have to speak Russian to join the program.

Below is a short description of the two options for Alternative Spring Break:

VLADIMIR (March 3-11, 2018):  Help several community organizations, including the Youth Health and Education Center, Karl Liebnicht Orphanage, Russian Orthodox Church, Handicapped Children’s Association “Light”, Vladimir Regional Veterans’ Home and others, while interacting with Russian university students and experiencing the delight and wonder of provincial Russia.

MUROM (March 10-18, 2018): Help university students at the Murom Institute (an affiliate of Vladimir State University) to improve their English language skills; prepare audio and video materials for their English language program.  During the Soviet period Murom was a closed city.  Today it remains isolated from traditional tourist routes.  Foreign language faculty and students are eager for contact with native English speakers.

Job: American English Program Teaching Positions (Vladimir, Russia)

The Serendipity American English and Culture Program has been in continuous operation at the American Home in Vladimir, Russia since September 1992 under the auspices of Serendipity: Russian Consulting & Development, Ltd.—now doing business as Serendipity-Russia. Demand for English lessons from native speakers remains very strong. In addition to classes, as noted above, our teachers offer lectures on topics of special interest to Russians.

This is an exceptional opportunity to experience Russia in a uniquely supportive atmosphere and to accomplish something worthwhile in the process. Previous teachers have commented very favorably on the quality of our facilities and teaching materials; the tremendous support provided by their colleagues, including our dedicated Russian staff; and how much they have enjoyed their Russian students. Study Abroad: Harvard Summer Russian Program (Tbilisi, Georgia)

Advance your Russian-language skills while exploring Georgian culture, history, literature, and film, including Georgia’s longstanding cultural and political relationship with Russia. The ancient capital city of Tbilisi, which is rapidly developing itself for the twenty-first century, offers a distinctive and fascinating site for continuing your Russian-language learning. You’ll also take several trips within Georgia – to Mtskheta, Davit Gareja, Gori, Borjomi, Batumi, and Kazbegi — to gain a deeper understanding of the Georgian nation and its regional context. Students can use their Russian in hands-on situations with a Russian theatrical troupe and in opportunities to participate in an archaeological dig.

Competition: Machine Learning (Moscow)

For students who combine an interest in data with an interest in Russia, this could be a very enriching experience. Students interested in math and computer sciences are invited to participate in the first ever international contest in Data Analysis.

The IDAO (International Data Analysis Olympiad), created by leading experts in data analysis for their future colleagues, aims to bring together analysts, scientists, professionals, and junior researchers from all over the world on a single platform. This is the first time an event of this scale will be held in Russia. The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, Yandex and Harbour. Space University organize the Olympiad with the support of Sverbank.

Study Abroad: Advanced Russian Language & Area Studies Program (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir or Almaty)

Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP)
RLASP offers participants the unique opportunity to study Russian language and area studies in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir or Almaty, while pursuing volunteer opportunities, internships, and cultural interests in an overseas immersion setting. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of Russian)

Funding: Boren Fellowships (Central/E Europe/Eurasia)

Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Award Amounts

Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for overseas study.

In addition, Boren Fellowships can provide limited funding for domestic language study that will supplement the overseas component. The maximum award for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000. Please review the budget guidelines for more information.

Length of Study

Boren Fellowships are made for a minimum of 12 weeks overseas and a maximum of one year overseas. Boren-funded programs can begin no earlier than June 1, 2018 and no later than March 1, 2019.

Boren Fellowships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion.  Therefore, preference will be given to applicants proposing overseas programs of 6 months or longer.  However, applicants proposing overseas programs of 3-6 months, especially those in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields are encouraged to apply. Summer Enrichment Program Overview

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program usually selects participants (known as “Rangel Scholars”) each year from universities throughout the United States. Students live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, DC.

The Program has two major components. First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focus on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,200.

Study Abroad: Maymester in Russia 2018 (Vanderbilt U.)

Maymester in Russia 2018 Vodka, bears, long winters, The Cold War, Putin as dictator…Break through these and other stereotypes! Who is Putin, really? Is Russia still a superpower? Why is Russia doing that? Should we fear Russia? Are Russians more Asian or European? What do Russians think? F ind answers to these questions and more!

Spend four weeks in the ancient provincial city of Vladimir – one of Russia’s first capital cities and political-economic powerhouses – studying, serving, exploring, interacting with Russians from many different social groups, including Russian university students, and reflecting about your knowledge and perceptions of contemporary Russia.

STUDYING

Daily presentations, lectures and excursions focus on aspects of economics, political science, international relations, education, culture, history, sociology, law, religious studies, etc. Every effort is made to include something relevant to each participant’s area of interest. BBA IP – Prague, Czech Republic, Summer 2018

Program Liaisons are an integral part of the BBA Short Term International Programs (BBA SIP) and are responsible for assisting the BBA SIP Program Coordinator and faculty leader(s) in delivering study abroad programs that meet the academic and cultural objectives of the BBA International Programs Office.

Purpose of the Position: One liaison will be hired to assist with the implementation and assessment of either the Management Program in Prague (or) International Accounting Program in Prague. The program liaison will handle administrative work associated with the program, serve as an on-site program coordinator, and act as a cultural ambassador. As part of this responsibility, the liaison will work closely with BBA IP staff, faculty leaders, and partner university administrators.
