Dacia (i.e. modern historical Transylvania) was, arguably, the most important frontier of the Roman Empire: its gold and silver sustained the collapsing imperial economy for two centuries. However, the “imperial idea” on the Eastern European Provincial frontier was more complex than Rome ever expected it… and it even outlasted the idea of Rome itself. Local Roman Provincial realities, born out of economic, cultural, social and political creolization, constant and dynamic negotiation of power, and shifting populations, have outlived the ideological centers that have claimed historical ownership of these regions, creating their own distinct expressions of identity.

Lang. Training: Virtual NSLI-Y Program Launch (US Dept. of State)

Virtual NSLI-Y is a new NSLI-Y program component launching in Fall 2019 to increase the reach and scope of the NSLI-Y program. Two different models for novice learners — the In-School Program and the Digital Classroom Program — will be piloted during the 2019-20 academic year.

Virtual NSLI-Y will operate in the spirit of the long-standing NSLI-Y Goals, with additional goals to introduce U.S. teens to language and culture of Virtual NSLI-Y target language and spark an interest in international travel, study abroad, language study, and intercultural learning.

“Warwick Translates Summer School” offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for individual attention. Places will be allocated on a strictly ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.

The course will be taught in an all-day workshop environment using a variety of texts including non-fiction (essays, journalism, academic) and fiction (poetry, fantasy, children’s literature, crime writing). Lunch time events will include discussion panels with publishers and editors. Evening events will include a Translation Slam and a keynote Lecture by Preti Taneja: ‘Translating Shakespeare in conflict and post-conflict zones: the challenge to “universal” human rights’.
