Study Abroad: New Summer Programs (SRAS)

Deadline for Applications: March 10, 2018

SRAS has announced three new programs beginning this summer. They have also extended deadlines on most of their other summer programs, but students should apply quickly.

Tajik Intensive – New Program

SRAS students have for many years studied Central Asian languages as part of broader coursework in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Beginning summer 2018 SRAS will offer an intensive program in Tajik. Intensive lessons and peer tutoring in Bishkek are supplemented with a week-long guided language and culture immersion in Tajikistan.

Literature in St. Petersburg – New Program!

Students will read, analyze, research, and discuss Russian literature in Russian. To support this, this course will be taught as an integrated part of an intensive program of Russian as a Second Language. This program is open to students who have taken 4 or more semesters of Russian.

Moscow-St.Petersburg Summer RSL – Special Program for 2018

Special for 2018, SRAS is offering an Russian as a Second Language program that allows students to split their time between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Study Abroad: Eurasian Regional Language Program (American Councils)

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of Eurasia. Participants may choose to study one of 16 regional languages:

Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz,

Pashto, Persian, Romanian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, or Yakut

PROGRAM DATES
Fall 2018: August 26 – December 20, 2018

Job description: The University of Arizona seeks a specialist in Russian literature and culture (20th c to present); with an innovative research agenda and strong teaching record. Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and demonstrated excellence in a variety of methodologies including blended learning technologies preferred. Ability and willingness to teach at all levels: Russian literature, language and culture, as well as general education courses. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary interests, as well as secondary interest in Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia, preferred. Visiting faculty are expected to teach three courses per semester, maintain an active research agenda, and perform appropriate service.

The Department of Russian & Slavic Studies is a dynamic unit actively engaged in undergraduate education through its double-track Russian major and its contribution to the University’s general education mission. The department has an excellent MA program, and engages the local and global community through experiential learning, faculty presentations, and Study Abroad programs.

Language Training: 2018 STARTALK “Proficiency-based Pedagogy for Russian (Middlebury College)

Middlebury College School of Russian is pleased to announce the 2018 STARTALK Summer Institute “Proficiency-based Pedagogy for Russian” intended for novice teachers of Russian and graduate students with no or limited teaching experiences.

The Institute provides participants with unique opportunities to gain a solid foundation in second language acquisition theory and language proficiency framework, and to transfer this knowledge into classroom practice. Participants will create teaching materials for different levels of instruction, implementing STARTALK-endorsed best teaching practices, and engage in practice-teaching in a safe environment with guidance from experienced language practitioners.

Program Dates:

Online Session: June 25 – 29, 2018 (required)

Online Russian Language Session: July 9 – 13, 2018 (optional)

Residential Session on Middlebury Campus: July 17 – 29, 2018 (required)

The Institute includes a week of online classes and a residential session on campus, both required.

During the on-line session participants will engage in learning and discussing theoretical approaches to language acquisition and principles of proficiency-based pedagogy, so that the on-campus session can be dedicated to applying this theoretical knowledge to classroom teaching and material development. During the on-campus session, participants will brainstorm, design, and implement curricular units, lessons and activities.

New for 2018, we will also offer an optional Online Russian Language Session, scheduled for the week preceding the residential session and designed to prepare non-native and heritage speakers for the immersion environment at the Davis School of Russian.

Institute’s participants will experience the unique immersive environment of the Middlebury Russian School. By living in the language, participants themselves will see how a learning community of people who speak Russian with varying levels of fluency can be built and sustained.

Tuition, lodging expenses, meals, textbooks, and classroom materials are covered by the STARTALK grant, and each participant is eligible to receive a travel reimbursement for up to $300. Participants will receive one course unit of graduate credit.

The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute (HUSI) is now accepting applications for its 2018 program.

Program Dates: June 23-August 11, 2018

HUSI offers seven weeks of intensive accredited university instruction in Ukrainian studies. Students earn academic credit while studying at an Ivy League university and exploring the dynamic city that surrounds it. Study Abroad: Rutgers in Russia- St. Petersburg (Rutgers Uni.)

The Department of German, Russian, and East European Languages and Literatures and the Center for Global Education at Rutgers University, New Brunswick are pleased to announce their summer 2018 study abroad program—Rutgers in Russia: St. Petersburg.

Applications are due March 15. The eight-week language and culture program will begin on June 9 and end on August 4, 2018. The program includes intensive language courses taught by instructors of the Derzhavin Institute (http://www.derzhavin.com/en/), excursions to museum and cultural sites of St. Petersburg, home stays with Russian families, and peer tutors.

Students from all majors and universities are eligible and invited to apply. No knowledge of Russian is required for admission, although some university Russian is preferred. All New Jersey residents, regardless of college affiliation, are eligible for in-state tuition. The program fee is $6,490 for New Jersey residents, and $7,230 for all others. Study Abroad: Summer Language Program in Ukrainian and Croatian (Uni. Kansas)

The University of Kansas invites applications to its summer programs in Ukrainian and Croatian language:

Ukrainian Language in L’viv, Ukraine

June 3 – July 17, 2018

Expand regional expertise and Ukrainian language skills during this 6 week program in medieval L’viv. The program is offered in conjunction with Ivan Franko National University; 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. FLAS eligible. The on-site director, University of Kansas faculty member Dr. Oleksandra Wallo, is a L’viv native and alumna of Ivan Franko National University with more than ten years of experience teaching Ukrainian language and culture at U.S. universities. Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. No previous knowledge of Ukrainian is necessary.

Language Institute in Zadar, Croatia

May 20 – June 30, 2018

During this 6 week summer program, students receive highly individualized Croatian language instruction while living in Zadar on the Adriatic coast. A program of lectures and cultural activities complement language instruction. Students study at LinguaCroatica, run by Prof. Mile Mamić of the University of Zadar. 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas. FLAS eligible. Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. One year of college-level Croatian is necessary for participation.
