The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies has launched a series of professional development webinars in collaboration with the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East-Central Europe and the American Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies.

April 11, 2018 (12pm EST): Doing Research on Eastern Europe and Russia in the EU: Research Infrastructures, Grant Models, and Career Mobility

This webinar will focus on career patterns in academia as well as in the field of infrastructure development in EU-countries. Participants will learn about the formats, chances and challenges when one wishes to develop an individual strategy for one’s trans-national career path. Against this backdrop and providing significant examples, Peter Haslinger will explain about bilateral and cross-European funding programs – this will also include some thoughts about advancing transatlantic exchange in the field of Eastern European and Russian Studies.

Speaker’s Bio: Peter Haslinger is Professor of East-Central European History at the Justus Liebig University Giessen and Director of the Herder Institute in Marburg, a research institution affiliated with the Leibniz Association and specializing in the history, art history and digital humanities of East Central Europe. Dr. Haslinger is Principal Investigator at the Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies, the International Center for the Study of Culture, and the Center for Media and Interactivity, all located at the Justus Liebig University. He likewise functions as a spokesperson for the Herder Institute Research Academy, which aims to bridge the gap between scholarship in Eastern European Studies and the development of research infrastructures. His scholarly interest focuses on the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and successor states in the 19th and 20th centuries. He has published widely on Hungarian, Czech and Slovak history as well as on questions of nation, region and cultural diversity, on cartography and questions of security. Dr. Haslinger is the spokesperson for the project group that enhances the visibility of Eastern European Studies across disciplines within the Leibniz Association. He is likewise involved in activities for the enhancement of the Humanities and Social Sciences on the European level, among others as a member of the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Network Board.

Study Abroad: Summer in Krakow (Jagiellonian Uni)

The School of Polish Language and Culture at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow is pleased to announce that 2018 summer programs are open for applications.

Every July and August several hundred participants from more than 40 countries have the unique opportunity not only to study Polish language, culture, and society, but also to spend time in the beautiful city of Kraków, meeting people from all around the world and making new friends. In summer 2018 students can participate in the 6-week program, 4-week program, and 3-week programs.

  • Four-week program from July 5-August 1
    • This program has been reintroduced with a new format! Every week additional activities  will take place within the language course: classes held in the city space, in museums and galleries, and in places loved by locals of Krakow as well as tourists.
  • Six-week program from July 5-August 15
  • Three-week program from July 5-25
  • Three-week program from July 26-August 15

DEADLINES:

• four-, six- and three-week programs which begin on July 5: MAY 31st, 2018

• three-week program which begins on July 26: JUNE 30th, 2018

Funding: Dissertation Research Grant (ASEEES)

Deadline for Applications: April 30, 2018

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies is sponsoring up to ten grants annually, at a maximum of $5000 each, for the purposes of conducting doctoral dissertation research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia in any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies in any discipline.  These awards may be held concurrently with other partial funding sources, but are intended to support students whose projects have not yet been fully supported. The grant recipient cannot concurrently hold the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship, Fulbright-Hays DDRA, SSRC IDRF and other similarly fully-funded fellowships.  The grant is for primary dissertation research, not for dissertation write-up. Study Abroad: Summer University in Moscow (HSE)

Deadline for Applications: April 8, 2018

Students are invited to apply to Summer University in Moscow, REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) in math, or Russian language intensive course. The Summer U. or REU can be combined with courses of Russian language on various levels, starting from beginners. All courses are taught in English. The application is free and the deadline is April 8, 2018. Along with courses in computer science, international relations and Russian studies, HSE will offer courses in economics for the first time:

Funding: Grant for Research (IHRCA)

Grant-in-Aid Awards

The Immigration History Research Center Archives (IHRCA) offers Grant-in-Aid Awards to support a visit in order to conduct research in our collections. Awards are available through co-sponsorship from the Immigration History Research Center and the IHRCA through the ethnic and general funds.

This award is open to scholars of all levels, including independent scholars, and supports a research visit of 5 days or more. Typically, awards are for $1,000, and four awards are given each year. The application is due June 1 of each year, and IHRCA aims to inform all applicants of their application status within 2 months, by July 30th of same year. PAE Government Services, under contract for the U.S. Department of State, is seeking applications from well-qualified U.S. citizens for the following position within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE): a manager with background in monitoring, political and security analysis and reporting to aid the OSCE Mission in Skopje in defining responses to developments in the field. The successful applicant will contribute to developing strategies, guidelines and SOPs for monitoring teams based in Skopje and Tetovo; analyze security-related developments and suggest responses; provide updates and briefings to senior management; ensure operations of early warning mechanisms; and cooperate and coordinate with other units including on projects and in regular reporting. Local language skills and knowledge of the political-military history of the region are desirable.

Funding: Kazakh, Uzbek & Uyghur Language Study (CESSI)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting applications for the Title VIII Fellowship! Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis for the following intensive courses:

  • Beginning Kazakh
  • Intermediate Kazakh
  • Beginning Uzbek
  • Intermediate Uzbek
  • Beginning Uyghur

U.S. citizens who are graduate students (including incoming students), scholars, and working professionals are eligible for the Title VIII Fellowship. Fellowships cover full tuition at CESSI plus a $2,500 stipend for the summer. International students and undergraduates may still apply for the tuition remission scholarship.

More about CESSI:

CESSI is an intensive, eight-week language program held each summer in Madison, Wisconsin. Students receive the equivalent of one year of language study during this time and will earn eight credits upon completion of the program. In addition to language classes, CESSI students have the opportunity to attend weekly lectures on Central Eurasia; participate in cultural events, including traditional cooking demonstrations; engage with local Central Eurasian communities; and network with other scholars of Central Eurasia. CESSI is a great opportunity for participants to gain language skills before conducting fieldwork or applying for jobs abroad.

Program Overview
This unique summer study abroad program at a premier university in Russia combines intensive Russian language coursework with cultural immersion and excursions in Saint Petersburg, Russia’s cultural capital. The program is open to students of all levels, including those with no Russian language skills. The program will run for six weeks and will be based at the Higher School of Economics, one of Russia’s most prestigious and top-rated universities.
Itinerary
July 17- August 25, 2018 (6 weeks)

July 16: Arrive in Saint Petersburg
July 17-Aug 24: Language and culture program
August 26: Departure from Saint Petersburg
The six-week language and culture program in Saint Petersburg includes:
Intensive University Academic Program
●       Four hours of Russian language coursework every weekday taught in Russian by faculty of the Higher School of Economics
●       Weekly lectures in English about Russian politics, culture and economy
●       One-on-one Russian language practice with a student buddy
●       Official transcript eligible for transfer credit upon successful completion of the program
Housing, Meals and Host Families
·      Comfort, convenience and security in a recently renovated student residence hall with kitchens, Wi-Fi, and 24 hour residential support
·      Shared double rooms
·      Option to stay with a Russian host family (includes breakfast)
·      Lunch will be provided at the University cafeteria Monday through Friday
Cultural Program
With one excursion each week, you will explore the city through a series of visits to museums (including the world-famous Hermitage), concerts, ballets, and other events.
A team of HSE Russian buddies will organize additional activities, such as day-long trips to Saint Petersburg historical suburbs, Russian sporting events, cooking and game nights.
About the City
Envisioned by Peter the Great as Russia’s window to the West and designed by French and Italian architects, Saint Petersburg became a testimony to opulence with golden palaces, pastel-colored mansions, and landscaped parks, gardens, and canals. Having endured the horrors of World War II and Stalinist repression, the people now cope with a new political and economic reality. Known as Leningrad from 1924 to 1991, the city of nearly five million is easily navigated by foot, bus, trolley, and an efficient metro system.
Program Cost
The program fee of $3,850 includes:
●       Tuition
●       Housing in a residence hall
●       Lunches on weekdays
●       Full-time program leadership and support
●       Weekly field trips and cultural activities
An additional fee of $600 applies for the host family option which includes breakfast. The final price is subject to change depending on the currency exchange rate.
Students will need to pay for their visa, airfare, textbooks and remaining meals.
Program Requirements
The program is open to Five College students.
Students with no Russian skills are encouraged to apply.
Students are required to have a valid passport in order to be accepted. Russian immigration requires that this passport is valid for 18 months beyond the end date of the program.
