Grad Program: Russian, East European, & Central Asian Studies (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting applications for our MA Degree Program in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (REECAS). The deadline to apply for matriculation in Fall 2025 is January 8, 2025.

The REECAS MA provides interdisciplinary area studies training for emerging professionals and future leaders. The curriculum is designed to promote:

  • abroad understanding of the cultural, political, economic, social, and historical factors that have shaped the development of societies in Eurasia, Russia, and Eastern and Central Europe;
  • professional-level proficiency in one or more languages of Eurasia and Eastern and Central Europe;
  • knowledge of methodological and analytical approaches of different disciplines that will contribute to a better understanding of the region and prepare students for conducting advanced research.

Study Abroad: Spring Break in Georgia (SRAS)

Join SRAS for Spring Break in Georgia. In this 8-day trip you will be immersed in Georgian landscape, food, and culture. We will be based in Tbilisi with day trips to Kakheti (wine country) and Kazbegi (mountains). Enjoy the amazing culinary side of Georgia with the full “Georgian table,” cooking class, and tastings.

The itineraries are based on weather conditions during that time period, which means we stay based (accommodations) in Tbilisi so as to be able to more easily make adjustments to the day trips. We have left plenty of time for independent exploration and we will offer some optional activities and give you recommendations. We’ll keep an eye on any cultural events taking place during your stay and we’ll introduce you to our spring semester students based in Tbilisi and to locals.

Hiperboreea journal (thematic issue)Contributors are invited to propose analyses and interpretations of the ways in which authors have discursively shaped group-identities based on cohabitation, common labour, place, political practices, class, ethnicity, gender, and social kinship as agents, passive characters, narrators, and narratees in narratives of the Balkans’ past. Contributors can also submit theoretical essays focusing on collective subjectivity through literary, narrative, sociological, political-science or anthropological approaches, with case studies from the region.

CFP: Memory, War, and Social Coherence: Bringing Together and Tearing Apart

We call for papers examining and exploring various aspects of memory and war. We understand war broadly from world wars to civil wars and regional clashes. Proposed papers can range from individual case studies to methodological considerations. Possible themes include, but are not limited to:

• controversial war memorials and places of remembrance

• the role of history teaching or textbooks in memory conflicts

• populist parties using narratives of war or their aftermath

• postcolonialism and conflicting memories of war

• intersections of memory cultures and politics related to war

• art and literature concerning war and post-war remembrance

• examples of post-war reconciliation

The official conference language is English. The conference is planned as an in-person event.

The International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) office at the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for the fiscal year (FY) 2025 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) program.
The GPA program provides grants to institutions and private, nonprofit education entities that organize programs for K-12 teachers, college students, and faculty to engage in short- or long-term overseas projects focused on training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies. GPA short-term projects include seminars, curriculum development, and group research or study. GPA long-term projects support advanced intensive overseas programs that focus on languages, the humanities, or social sciences.
IFLE expects to make 20 new awards totaling approximately $3.3 million under the FY 25 GPA competition. The application is now available at www.grants.gov.
