Bobby R. Inman Award for Student Scholarship on Intelligence (UT Austin)

Austin, Texas – The Clements-Strauss Intelligence Studies Project of The University of Texas at Austin announces the 10th annual competition recognizing outstanding student research and writing on topics related to intelligence and national security. The winner of the “Inman Award” will receive a cash prize of $5,000, with two semifinalists each receiving a cash prize of $2,500. This competition is open to unpublished work by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs at accredited U.S. higher education institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. The deadline for submitting papers is June 30, 2024.

Acad. Job: Visiting Lecturer in REE Studies (Bowdoin College)

The Department of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) at Bowdoin College invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible visiting lecturer position for the 2024-2025 academic year. The appointment begins July 1, 2024, and is for one year with possible renewal for a second year pending successful review and reappointment. The teaching load is five courses per year at varying levels of the curriculum, from first- and second-year Russian language courses to literature/culture offerings taught in Russian and in translation. Native or near-native fluency in Russian is expected. A PhD in Russian or a related discipline is preferred at the start of appointment; ABD considered.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. CFP: Religion, Human Dignity, and Human Rights: New Paradigms for Russian and the West

November 2: Samuel Moyn, Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History, Yale University

The Hamilton Center at the University of Florida and the Northwestern University Research Initiative in Russian Philosophy, Literature, and Religious Thought are calling for paper proposals for a conference on human rights and human dignity, held in honor of the 150th birthday of Nikolai Berdyaev, a Russian émigré who brought to Europe a Russian religious philosophy of freedom, dignity, and rights. The conference intends to bring together scholars from multiple regional and disciplinary perspectives to investigate the question of religion and rights, East and West. Conference participants should consider the option to produce papers suitable (in their final form) for publication in an eventual edited volume.

CFP: Belarusian Visual Culture in the 21st Century

We are inviting essay submissions for an edited volume on contemporary visual culture of Belarus. The volume is projected to have 12-14 chapters (5000-6000 words each) on Belarusian visual culture divided in three parts: early 2000s, 2010s, and post-2020 visual culture. The volume is expected to have color illustrations and to feature interviews with contemporary artists, filmmakers, and cultural figures.

Submissions on all aspects of Belarusian visual culture are encouraged, including, but not limited to: art history; all aspects of visual arts and art spaces; photography; visual aspects of social media; television and media studies; theatre and cinema studies; dance studies; street art and folk art; protest visual culture and visual art as testimony; independent and official art.

Russian-Immersion Summer Jobs (Concordia Language Villages, Minnesota, US)

Option 1: Culinary Arts Staff, July 7-August 11 or July 7-August 18 – all levels
We are hiring for bakers, cooks, and assistant chefs. Staff will receive a week of training in food preparation specific to the cuisines of the Russian-speaking world and then be responsible for preparing the food under the supervision of the Village Chef. The language of the kitchen is English, but Culinary Arts staff are welcome to participate in the language immersion community when they are not cooking, which, given that it is a residential program, can easily be 4-5 hours/day. Room, board, and transportation from the Minneapolis airport to the program in Bemidji, MN are included, but staff are responsible for their own travel to the Minneapolis airport. Students who need work for the whole summer can indicate availability for one of the languages that runs in June, as well as the Russian village, for a full summer of employment.
