Language Training: Elementary Russian Online Summer (Rutgers University)

Course Dates: May 27-July 3 and July 3 – August 13, 2025

Rutgers University is offering elementary Russian asynchronously online in Summer 2025! The course covers two semesters of Russian in 12 weeks. Open to all students; New Jersey residents are eligible for in-state tuition. Here are the details:
Russian 101 (01:860:101, 4 credits): 5/27/25–7/3/25
Russian 102 (01:860:102, 4 credits): 7/7/25-8/13/25
NJ Resident fee: $459/credit ($1836 per course, $3672 for both)
Non-NJ Resident fee: $1096/credit ($4384 per course, $8768 for both)
Summer session student fee: $162

Postdoctoral Research Positions re: State, Church, and Body Politics in Post-Communism

The University Lucian Blaga Sibiu (ULBS), Romania, invites applications for three (3) postdoctoral research positions to work in the FERBOPO project, funded by the European Research Area (ERA) Chair.
Position: Postdoctoral researcher
Period: 24 months fixed contract starting on 1 November 2025, with the possibility of renewal for an additional 24 months based on positive evaluation
Number of Hours per Month: 168 (full time equivalent)
Salary: 3,800 Euros per month, including taxes

Description of project: The FERBOPO project aims at building a new research group focused on the complex relationship between State, Church and Body Politics in post-communism that would foster excellence in social sciences and better integrate ULBS in the ERA. Under the guidance of ERA Chair Prof. Lavinia STAN, the new research group will engage in research related to State, Church and Body Politics, attract competitive research funding, and assist ULBS to implement institutional reforms that align with ERA priorities.

Funding: Dame Elizabeth Hill Award

Applications are now open for PhD students or Early Career Researchers undertaking research in history, linguistics, literature, anthropology, archaeology, or related disciplines.

The Dame Elizabeth Hill Award is funded by a gift from former SSEES academic and Professor of Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge, the linguist Dame Elizabeth Hill. The Scholarship honours Professor Dame Elizabeth’s work as a linguist and seeks to help prepare future expert Slavists of wider scope and horizons. This award of up to £18,000 over the course of three years is intended to support researchers who demonstrate outstanding academic promise in undertaking ambitious research projects related to a premodern Slavonic subject, including paleography in the Slavonic languages and the pre-1800 literature of the Slavs.

Asynchronous Histories Summer School will be held in Warsaw 22-26 September 2025.

The Asynchronous Histories Summer School aims to explore regions and moments in history marked by the coexistence of asynchronous sociopolitical tendencies and processes. These conditions often reveal paradoxical outcomes when seemingly well-established actors and mechanisms are put into practice. The absence—or inefficiency—of “The Great Synchronizer,” whether imperial order, centralized state apparatus, or the power of capital, has, in various periods and regions, created fertile grounds for blending the old and the new in unequal and unexpected ways.

Fieldwork Opportunities in Russian and Kazakh Folklore

Partnership for Russian, East European and Eurasian Folkloreinvites students and established scholars in folklore, cultural anthropology, ethnomusicology and related areas to join our field research teams to document Russian and Kazhak folklore in Kazakhstan. 

The research expeditions are led by Dr. Yelena Minyonok and Dr. Alevtina Tsvetkova, respected folklorists with years of experience in guiding students and collaborating with established scholars. Volunteers pay their own way plus a share of the general expedition expenses.  

Some financial assistance is available.
