Study Abroad/Internship: Slavic, Folklore, Ethnomusicology, and Cultural Anthropology

Students and scholars in Slavic studies, folklore, ethnomusicology and cultural anthropology have until January 31, 2020 to apply for scholarships and internships for PREEEF programs in Russia, Siberia and Kazakhstan.

The scholarship amount of $2000 supports participation in a folklore-collecting expedition led by a qualified Russian or Kazakh scholar. These expeditions are opportunities to establish international scholarly ties, improve language skills, and learn fieldwork techniques while conducting interviews, making video and audio recordings, serving as audiences and processing collected field materials.  Expedition teams are immersed in local customs, language and food. Fluency in the local language is helpful, but not required.

The unpaid internship offers inexpensive housing in Moscow in exchange for 4-6 weeks with the Gorky Institute of World Literature, editing rough English translations of articles by Institute scholars. Interns acquire practical experience in scholarly publishing and receive guidance from IMLI staff for any personal research they wish to carry out in Moscow. Internships are offered only to PREEEF folklore expedition participants.

Job: Digital Editor Internship (Russia Life Magazine)

Russian Life magazine seeks a Digital Editor intern to curate and compile its weekly e-letter, The Russia File, and to play an active role in the magazine’s growing digital footprint. Requirements:

* Superb English writing skills (native English).
* Ability to write succinctly, quippily, and knowledgeably about Russian culture (with little or no need for style editor intervention).
* At least intermediate Russian reading ability.
* Excellent online search, fact-checking, and news survey skills.
* Excellent sense of humor and a taste for offbeat, under-the-radar news.
* Basic HTML skills and comfort with CMS and online blog editing systems, including image manipulation, or willingness to gain this skill.

This is a part-time internship that is scoped at 2-3 hours per week and has a modest stipend.

Job: Volunteer English Teachers in Central Europe

Learning Enterprises connects volunteer teachers and host communities around the world in order to foster cross-cultural exchange and empower young leaders.

Learning Enterprises is an entirely student-run 501(c)(3) Not-For-Profit organization that began as a way of connecting people who had the expertise to share and time to spare. Volunteers, most of whom were college students, had their summers free and wanted to spend it in a meaningful way. The students in underserved communities — many of them rural villages in developing countries — also had their summers free, and these communities had a felt need for extra English language classes. To create a mutually beneficial program, someone just needed to connect the two parties, and that is what Learning Enterprises does every summer. The volunteers travel to the underserved community, and the local communities take them into their families, providing meals, room and board for an average of six weeks. In exchange, the volunteers teach English in local schools for an average of 20 hours/week. The program operates on the goodwill and trust between the volunteers and the people they teach. Learning Enterprises facilitates this meeting by screening host communities and families as well as preparing the volunteers to teach and become acclimated to a different culture. Learning Enterprises is centered on the idea of connecting people.

The U.S. Russia Foundation invites applications for its internship program in the Foundation’s Washington DC office for Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. USRF interns will have responsibilities in two areas: (1) supporting USRF staff in grant administration and management, and in the operation of the Washington office; and (2) researching, writing, and producing an in-house report for USRF Board members and staff on current trends in Russia and U.S.-Russia relations.

USRF interns will also participate in a program of seminars, discussions, and events to develop their expertise on Russia and knowledge of careers and professions in government, the private sector, and education.

Internships: Cold War International History Project

Deadline: November 1, 2019

Spring 2020 Internships with CWIHP
The Cold War International History Project is seeking internship applications for the Spring 2020 semester. Interns work on-site at the Wilson Center and will support HAPP programs such as the Cold War International History Project (CWIHP), the North Korea International Documentation Project (NKIDP), and the Nuclear Proliferation International History Project (NPIHP). Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or masters degree program, have graduated within the past year, or have been accepted to an advanced degree program in history, political science, library science, or related field within the next year. Internships are unpaid, though we do offer interns the opportunity to earn academic credit in accordance with their programs’ requirements. International students are eligible, but they must hold a valid F-1 or J-1 visa at the time of application and appropriate work authorization.

Grad. Program: Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (University of Kansas)

The Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies (CREES) at the University of Kansas is now accepting applications for the M.A. program in Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies for Fall 2020. The deadline to apply to the M.A. program to be considered for funding is January 1st.  For more information and to apply, visit our website. 

The KU Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies (CREES) is nationally recognized as one of the leading institutions for the study of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.  The two-year M.A. program offers future professionals a comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge of Russia, Ukraine, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and countries of the West Slavic (Poland, Czech Republic) and South Slavic (Balkan) regions. Students will gain advanced language skills and the ability to understand and analyze the complex events, history, and politics of the region. Our REES graduates have become leaders in a wide range of fields, ranging from higher education and government service to work in NGOs and the private sector.  An accelerated graduate program is available for students wanting to complete their REES MA within a 12-month or 18-month period. The accelerated FASt track is open to all graduate students, but specifically designed for Foreign Area Officers (FAOs).

Funding and Internships

  • Apply for a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) at Russian Review, the renowned Russian Studies Journal (salary: $17,000, in-state tuition). Interested applicants may contact Dr. Eve Levin, evelevin@ku.edu
  • Gain experience as a CREES/FMSO Security Analyst Intern, utilizing regional expertise and target language skills in the analysis of security related issues
  • Apply for the Bramlage and Willcoxon Scholarship, an annual fellowship of up to $4,000 for graduate students with a strong connection to Kansas
  • Study the Ukrainian language with the support of the Jarosewycz Scholarship, which awards up to $3,000 towards Ukrainian language classes 
  • Apply for the George C. Jerkovich Award, for graduate students who show a strong dedication to the study of Southeast Europe and the Former Yugoslavia ($1,500 per semester)
  • Study the Russian language with the support of the Clowes Russian Language Awards
  • Inquire about Graduate Teaching Assistantships (CREES students have received graduate teaching assistantships in Slavic, Humanities, and other language departments)

Please let them know that we have a vacancy for one of our best internships available in the city of Novosibirsk, the administrative capital of Siberia and the third largest city in Russia.

The internship comprises of a paid teaching position at the English language courses that we run in Novosibirsk, a Russian course that is offered at a very special price, and participating in our children’s language camps as a volunteer teacher of English. A course on methodology of teaching English to Russian learners is offered to those who have not got any teaching experience. We provide FREE ACCOMMODATION in the city of Novosibirsk and, if necessary, an opportunity to work on a year-abroad project under the guidance of our professional teachers. How far could a student internship at the U.S. Department of State take you? Just for starters, it would give you a coveted inside look at diplomacy in action, and the range of careers and responsibilities found in the Foreign Service and Civil Service. You’ll gain valuable work experience that you can apply to virtually every endeavor — whether you work in government or the private sector. The U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program is an unpaid internship with the opportunity to work in U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the world, as well as in various bureaus located in Washington, D.C. and at Department offices around the United States. This program is designed to provide substantive learning experiences in a foreign affairs environment.

While the duties of U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program participants vary from bureau to bureau, office to office, and embassy to embassy, it is not uncommon for these students to:

  • Participate in meetings with senior-level U.S. Government or foreign government officials
  • Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policymakers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives
