Study Abroad: Maymester in Poland (UT-Austin)

The Center for Russian Eastern, European, and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) in cooperation with Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland, is offering a three-credit lecture/discussion program with four potential field study components in-country. This program will include a Spring 2018 course component at The University of Texas at Austin and a field study component in Poland during May–June through a 2018 Maymester. Click here for more on SRAS in Warsaw.

In this program, students will be introduced to a general overview of social justice and security policy studies at UT, after which they will have an opportunity to delve in-depth into one of four topics in Poland, working closely with experts in one of the following fields:

(a) Identity, Diversity and Tolerance in Polish Society;
(b) Security Policy in Central Europe and Poland;
(c) Cyber-security Issues and Policy in Poland; and
(d) The Criminal Justice System in Poland.

As the topics are clearly linked to potential professional trajectories, students will have the option (for an additional fee) to further their professional interests by being placed in on-site internships in the field they are specializing in during the Maymester. Internships would take place after the program and would be eligible for additional UT credit through an affiliation agreement with the host institution, Collegium Civitas in Warsaw.

One- to three-month fellowships are available for postdoctoral or independent scholars whose projects require extensive use of the Ransom Center’s collections.

TRAVEL STIPENDS

Travel stipends are available for postdoctoral or independent scholars whose projects require less than one month’s use of the Center’s collections. Travel stipends may not be combined with other Ransom Center fellowships.

DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS

Funding: American Fellowships Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants (AAUW)

AAUW’s American Fellowships program has been in existence since 1888, making it the oldest noninstitutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. The program provides fellowships for women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks.

Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide support to scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication and to independent researchers to prepare research for publication. Preference will be given to applicants whose work supports the vision of AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in History of Art

With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, the Department of History of Art invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship position beginning July 1, 2018. The fellowship offers a stipend of $50,000/year.

We are seeking applicants who are specialists in the in the field of 20th-century Europe and North America, spanning the years 1914-1991, with particular emphasis on art between WWI and WWII. The History of Art department’s strength lies in its pioneering global focus. A successful candidate would be able to dialogue with other faculty members’ global concerns.

Postdoctoral Fellows teach one course per semester (four different courses over two years). Candidates should propose an introductory, 2000-level course and an upper, 4000-level course. These courses should be conceived of as smaller seminars and their topics should fall within the field of 20th-century European and North American art.

Academic Job: Jean Monnet Postdoctoral Fellowships (RSCAS)

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers one-year Jean Monnet Fellowships to scholars who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship, i.e. 1 September 2018 for the academic year 2018-19. The Fellowship programme is open to post-docs, tenure track academics and those wishing to spend their sabbatical at the Robert Schuman Centre. We invite you to become part of a lively and creative academic community. The Centre offers up to 20 Fellowships a year.

Jean Monnet Fellows are selected on the basis of a research proposal and of their CV. The research proposal should fit well with one of the Centre’s main research themes, programmes and projects. The three main research themes of the RSCAS are:

  • Integration, Governance and Democracy;
  • Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and
  • 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

Fellowship Details

  • Stipend: $30,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000
  • Tenure: one year beginning summer 2018
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS online fellowship administration system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 pm Eastern Daylight Time, October 25, 2017.
  • Notifications will be sent via email in late March 2018.

The information below is a summary of the program, and details eligibility, application requirements, and evaluation criteria for the program. Please read carefully through the material and accompanying FAQ.

Summary

ACLS invites applications for Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which support a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of PhD dissertation writing. The program encourages timely completion of the PhD. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure and no later than August 31, 2019. A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.

ACLS will award 65 fellowships in this competition for a one-year term beginning between June and September 2018 for the 2018-19 academic year. The fellowship may be carried out in residence at the fellow’s home institution, abroad, or at another appropriate site for the research. These fellowships may not be held concurrently with any other fellowship or grant.

The total award of up to $38,000 includes a stipend plus additional funds for university fees and research support. In addition to the monetary support that the fellowship offers, Dissertation Completion Fellows are able to apply to participate in a seminar on preparing for the academic job market.  The seminar takes place over three days in the fall of the fellowship year.

Funding: Samuel H. Kress Fellowship (Fitch Foundation)

Deadline for Applications: October 25, 2017

Research grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to one mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America.

Funding for the Kress Fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Criteria for Evaluation

Applications are reviewed by the Fitch Trustees. Projects will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • The project will make a meaningful contribution to the academic and/or professional field of historic preservation in the United States
  • The applicant has a realistic plan for the dissemination of research and/or final work product
  • The project has a clear and realistic goals, timeframe, work plan, and budget
  • The project demonstrates innovative thinking, original research and creative problem solving and/or design

Conference: Commemorating the Revolution: October 1917 (Woodrow Wilson Center)

Date of Conference: October 23, 2017

The Kennan Institute will be hosting its final event marking the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution. Speakers will focus on the policies of the Provisional Government, the Bolshevik victory, and the political and military consequences that followed in its immediate aftermath. The seminar will be followed by a book talk from 4:00 – 5:30 by William Taubman, who will be discussing his new biography on Mikhail Gorbachev. Thus, the day’s proceedings will cover the beginning and the end of the Soviet Union.

The seminar has been generously supported by the editorial board of the book series Russia’s Great War and Revolution, a multinational scholarly effort that aims to fundamentally transform understanding of Russia’s “continuum of crisis” during the years 1914-1922. The book talk is an event in the Washington History Seminar series, sponsored jointly by the National History Center of the American Historical Association and the Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program. CFP: REE Jewish Cultures Jr. Scholar Workshop (U. of Illinois)

Deadline for Submissions: December 15, 2017

The Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois invites submissions for the Russian and East European Jewish Cultures Junior Scholar Workshop, to be held in Champaign, Illinois, on May 21 and May 22, 2018. The workshop is open to advanced graduate students and early career scholars (in their first three years after the PhD). Abstracts and papers should highlight the critical methodologies used in the work. Selected papers will be pre-circulated among the participants, to maximize opportunity for discussion. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet with the Slavic Reference Service.

To be considered, please send your 400 word abstract and CV by December 15, 2017, to eavrutin@illinois.edu and hlmurav@illinois.edu. We will then inform participants who have been selected and ask you to develop a paper of no more than 8,000 words (excluding notes). The workshop will pay for participants’ hotel expenses and meals. Modest travel subsidies may be available, if participants are not able to obtain funds from their home universities.
