The Global Governance, Justice, & Security Program at the Stimson Center
As the world confronts myriad, interconnected challenges — from ending civil wars and extreme poverty to combating climate change and information warfare — the very concept of global collective action is in question. At the same time, the world faces a severe, and widening, governance deficit as our system of global governance is continually asked to do more with less. In addition to multiple challenges and obstacles to deliver justice and security across the globe, the current system is under attack by resurgent nationalism, protectionism, and critiques of the multilateral system’s legitimacy. Stimson’s Global Governance, Justice & Security Program 〈GGJustSec〉 aims to advance more capable global and regional institutions to better cope with existing and emerging global challenges and to create new opportunities through effective multilateral action, including with the global business community and civil society.
The Global Governance, Justice & Security program contributes timely knowledge products to an intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder conversation to produce meaningful changes in the international system. It builds directly on major milestones achieved by the Albright-Gambari Commission on Global Security, Justice & Governance 2014-2016 and Stimson’s Just Security 2020 Program 2016-2020, in addition to closely collaborating with the Coalition for the UN We Need, Together First, and Alliance for Multilateralism.
Through a combination of policy dialogues, research and analysis, and online network-building, the program engages stakeholders to create change through five channels:
- Global Governance Innovation Network GGIN. The GGIN brings together world class scholarship with international policymaking to address fundamental global governance challenges, threats, and opportunities.
- Stimson-Doha Forum Collaboration. Since 2019, the Stimson Center and Doha Forum have closely collaborated on an annual report on the future of global governance, a global governance innovation policy brief series, events on strengthening and increasing participation in global governance, and plenary sessions and expert workshops at the annual Doha Forum. Established in 2000, the Doha Forum is a global platform for dialogue, bringing together leaders in policy to build innovative and action driven networks.
- Climate Governance Commission. The Stimson Center is a strategic partner of the Climate Governance Commission, which innovates feasible, high impact global governance solutions for urgent, exponential climate action to limit global temperature rise to or below 1.5°C.
- UN75 Follow-through Advocacy with the Coalition for the UN We Need & Together First. In conjunction with the Alliance for Multilateralism and other partners, the Stimson Center will continue to support and co-organize activities, co-led by the Coalition for the UN We Need and Together First, to build more effective and inclusive global governance.
- Peace and Regional Connectivity with Afghanistan. This project undertakes original research, prepares op-eds, fields media interview requests, and contributes scholarship to conferences on peacebuilding and regional cooperation with Afghanistan.
We are go-getters with an entrepreneurial spirit. For us, curiosity and passion are more important than encyclopedic knowledge of aspects of today’s global governance reform debate, but we are all great at growing our book of knowledge quickly. We are a horizontal team and we consider our interns as core members of the team, meaning that you will not have time to get bored!
DUTIES
Responsibilities for an intern include:
- Research, writing, analysis, and editing of program publications.
- Coordination of program events, including support for high level policy dialogues with public leaders, United Nations ambassadors, and senior policymakers.
- Briefings and summary notes on related events.
- Programmatic and administrative support.
QUALIFICATIONS
Generally, strong candidates for this position will have the following qualifications:
- Interest in the United Nations, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, climate governance, economic globalization, cyber-security, and multidisciplinary approaches to security and justice challenges.
- Strong research and analysis skills, including writing and editing.
- Proactivity and excellent attention to detail.
- Full-time availability preferred.
This internship is more suited for graduate students but strong applications from undergraduate students will also be considered.
