The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is now accepting applications for summer 2020 study abroad programs in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
All CIEE summer programs in Russia feature:
- 24/7 on-site support
- Comprehensive pre-departure and onsite orientations: an introduction to Russian culture, practical matters of living in the city and being in the program
- Carefully vetted housing: host families (St. Petersburg); centrally-located hostel (St. Petersburg); on campus dormitory (Moscow)

Programs for University Students:
The eight-week Russian Language Program (Summer RLP) at St. Petersburg State University offers intensive instruction in grammar, conversation and phonetics at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Additionally, the program’s curriculum includes the three-credit course, “Discovering Russia: Music, Film and Current Press,” taught in Russian by expert faculty. Tutoring by qualified instructors of Russian as a foreign language is included in the program fee.

The four-week Russian Area Studies Program (Summer RAS) at St. Petersburg State University is offered in three modules; students may enroll in one, two, or all three. Each session offers a three-credit, content-based course conducted in English and an optional one-credit Communicative Russian Language course designed for students without previous knowledge of Russian.

The four-week Moscow Business and International Relations (Summer MBIR) at Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) offers students the opportunity to explore international relations and diplomacy issues through coursework, to volunteer at the American Center, and to participate in co-curricular site visits to the US Embassy, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and think tanks. The intensive three-credit course, “Russia and the US in International Relations,” is taught in English. Students may elect to take a one-credit Communicative Russian Language course designed for those without previous knowledge of Russian.

Programs for High School Students:
The three-week Exploring St. Petersburg through the Arts: Classical to Cutting Edge introduces high school students not only to Russian classical art, such as architecture, painting, sculpture, and ballet but also to non-traditional artistic forms, such as decorative arts, public art, street art, landscape design and culinary art. The program focuses on students’ personal discovery of St. Petersburg’s artistic and cultural scenes through their involvement in hands-on, interactive activities, including site visits, meetings with artists and architects, master-classes, and a creative video project.

The three-week Diplomacy in Practice: Problem Solving with Russian Students offers high school participants the opportunity to explore global relations, to build their diplomacy skills, and to implement them with their Russian peers. During the program, which is co-hosted by the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), the cohort of US and Russian students will engage in Model-UN style debates and simulations, participate in skill building workshops, attend lectures by Russian experts in the field of international relations, and observe diplomacy first-hand during site visits to the US Embassy and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
