Conference/CFP: Internet Communication: Multiformat and Multifunctionality (Higher School of Social Sciences, Russia)

You are invited to take part in the conference ‘Internet Communication: Multiformat and Multifunctionality’, 29 – 30 October 2020 in Arkhangelsk (Russia), held by the Higher School of Social Sciences, Humanities and International Communication of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov in Arkhangelsk with the support of the Lecturate of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Ekaterinburg.

Internet-communication today develops in a direction, where different formats and modi are used, which interact with each other and lead to the appearance of new communicative phenomena – e.g. Internet memes, live-broadcasting or photo-histories.

We propose researchers from different fields of research to think about and reflect on the linguistic, social, psychological and pragmatic kind of communicative phenomena on the Internet. Researchers, university teachers, PhD candidates and postgraduate students are invited to participate in the conference.

This is a call for content to be featured in The Internet column of the journal Slavic & East European Information Resources, vol. 22.

Considering researchers’ and librarians’ almost absolute dependence on remote discovery and access during the coronavirus pandemic, there could hardly be a more appropriate time or venue for you to share your experience with colleagues.

How has your work changed by moving entirely online? What new online tools or resources have you discovered? What role is the internet playing in different SEE regions during the pandemic? Maybe you’re part of a new RuNet literacy project or effort to collect online repositories of Central European historical newspapers. What have been the challenges, the lessons, and the outcomes of such projects, and what work still needs to be done?

The Slavic and East European Blog (SEEB) is seeking submissions for an upcoming series on how teachers in the field are coping with and adapting to COVID-19-related disruptions. Specifically, we are interested in creative teaching methods you have developed using Zoom or other video conferencing technology.

If you are interested in writing a short (500–1,000 word) blog post, we’d be happy to share it with our readers. Please contact us directly at seej@osu.edu with your ideas. We also encourage the submission of thematic articles, essays, interviews, and translations.

Proposals are being accepted until August 15, and should be sent to the head of the Stream division, Dr. Meghan Murphy-Lee murphyle@uwm.edu. Although this is a panel about literature, we welcome submissions from beyond literary studies, e.g. from historians who find the topic interesting. Feel free to email Helen Stuhr-Rommereim directly if you are unsure whether your proposal would fit the stream. As AATSEEL will be fully online this year, presenters can attend the conference from anywhere.

Grad Program: PhD Fellow in Linguistics– Keyword/Keymorph Analysis of Russian and Norwegian News Media (The Arctic University of Norway)

A PhD position in Linguistics is available at the Department of Language and Cultur e (ISK), Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL). The position is part of the THREAT-DEFUSER project which explores the role of “soft” information strategies propagated through mass and social media that can be used in hybrid warfare. We investigate Norwegian perceptions of Russia, as well as Russian perceptions of Norway, in the context of Norwegian national security.

The position is affiliated with both the CLEAR (Cognitive Linguistics: Empirical Approaches to Russian) and Sami language technology (Giellatekno) research groups.

ISK offers one-year programmes, as well as full Bachelor and Master programmes in the following fields: General linguistics, literature, art history, media and documentation studies, English, Kven, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Sami, Spanish, and German. It also offers PhD programmes in linguistics, cultural/literary studies, art history, as well as media and documentation studies.

Virtual Study Abroad: Learn Russian in the EU

“Learn Russian in the European Union” designed full-featured virtual study abroad programs and a set of flexible online components that may be integrated into Russian curriculum at home universities in the Fall 2020 semester.

In spring and summer 2020, we completed several successful and feature-rich virtual study abroad programs for our long-time partners in the USA. Now we make this experience and infrastructure available to all students, teachers and universities.

“Learn Russian in the EU” is accepting applications for Fall 2020 Semester programs:

• Virtual semester abroad program: Russian language and cultural communication
This program includes academic courses (standard and electives), individual peer communication tutors, and interactive virtual excursions.
Daugavpils University will award 24 ECTS (12 US) credits.

Translation and Interpreting Studies Program (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

Translation and Interpreting Studies program (UWM TIS).

Due to stringent and immediate budget cuts imposed by our administration, the Russian to English track is “likely to be suspended for the foreseeable future” (read: cancelled) unless more students enroll in the 3-credit-hour Introductory Russian to English Translation Workshop *this fall*. I have been informed that our admin is aware of the value of TIS, of Russian expertise, etc.; still, something must go in order for the department to comply with system-wide financial measures, so this Russian translation seminar is on the chopping block unless enrollment increases enough to make the course profitable.

Mellon/American Councils for Learned Societies Fellowship

The Mellon/ACLS Scholars and Society program aims to amplify the broad potential of doctoral education in the humanities by supporting doctoral faculty as they pursue publicly engaged scholarship and advocate for diverse professional pathways for emerging PhDs. The program offers opportunities for faculty with fulltime appointments in PhD-granting humanities departments or programs in the United States to engage significant societal questions in their research, serve as ambassadors for humanities scholarship beyond the academy, and deepen their support for innovations in doctoral education on their campuses.

Scholars and Society fellowships enable faculty who teach and advise doctoral students to pursue research projects while in residence at a US-based cultural, media, government, policy, or community organization of their choice. Fellows and their colleagues at host institutions are expected to create a mutually beneficial partnership in which they collaborate, interact, and learn about each other’s work, motivating questions, methods, and practices. The Scholars and Society program complements the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program, which places recent humanities PhDs in nonprofit and government organizations.
