U.S.-Kazakhstan University Partnerships Grants Program (American Councils)

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce a request for project proposals for the U.S.-Kazakhstan University Partnerships Grants Program 2020-21.

Funded by the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, the U.S.-Kazakhstan University Partnerships Grants Program aims to establish new partnerships between higher education institutions, strengthen educational ties between the two countries, and bolster English-language programming.

Administered by American Councils for International Education (American Councils), these grants are designed to adapt policies, practices, and administrative structures for teaching and learning English and English for special purposes in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and modify teaching and curriculum for student outcomes in those areas.

Conference: Sacred Geography: Multi-Disciplinary Approaches to Time and Space (Nazarbayev University)

Event date: September 25-26, 2020

International Virtual Conference

This conference aims to bring together multidisciplinary approaches, including in the fields of religious studies, cultural anthropology, archaeology, history among others, to sacred landscapes, religious sites, and spatial dimensions of religion. The conference is dedicated to any set of themes, regions, religious traditions, methodologies and technologies that advance the theoretical and analytical paradigms of space and place. The conference will be attended by researchers in humanities and social sciences from such countries as Kazakhstan, Russia, China, USA, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Australia, Singapore, who use new methodologies in studying the role of space and place in religious traditions. The conference will feature projects with a digital humanitarian or the social component, including technologies such as photogrammetry, electronic atlases, cartography, and GIS in the field of pedagogy, tourism and cultural heritage preservation.

The working languages of the conference will be Kazakh, Russian and English.

Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ukrainian Studies

The Petro Jacyk Education Foundation is accepting proposals from universities in North America to establish a new Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ukrainian Studies. The objective of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship is to annually support one of the most promising junior scholars studying contemporary Ukraine and thereby to advance academic understanding of Ukrainian politics, history and society.

Eligibility:

The Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship is available to universities in North America with an existing department, research centre or program in Ukrainian studies. The Fellowship will be open to recently awarded PhDs.

Free Virtual Russian Pronunciation Master Class

Kimberly DiMattia will be offering a free virtual Master Class in Russian Pronunciation this fall based on her textbook Unlocking Russian Pronunciation (which can be found at: https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/unlocking-russian-pronunciation-supplementary-multimedia-mini-course-phonetics-based-famous). The course is open to students at all levels of Russian as well as to instructors who would like to observe Dr. DiMattia’s method in action and apply it to their own teaching!

Critical Languages Scholarships, Russian (US Department of State)

Program Overview

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century’s globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

Conference: The Other Europe: Changes and Challenges 1989

Event Date: September 11-12, 2020

On Sept 11-12, Yale University will host an international conference “THE OTHER EUROPE: CHANGES AND CHALLENGES 1989” that will run in a virtual format. The conference will gather nearly 30 scholars from around the world to explore the cultural changes in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe over the past three decades and to reflect on the idea of the region’s “Europeanness.” These questions will be explored through post-1989 literature, film, and the visual and performing arts. The conference will also include a virtual 3D exhibit “Visual Acts of Radical Care: An Exhibition of Female Artists-Activists from Central and Eastern Europe,” curated by Yale Visiting Fellow Aniko Szucs.

Pre-registration is required to gain access to these presentations, which should be watched in advance of the panel sessions, and in order to virtually attend the webinar on Sept 11-12. The Herman B Wells Library at Indiana University (Bloomington, USA) and Nazarbayev University Library (Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan) invite all those interested in the literature and culture of Central Asia to take part in an online poetry hour in honor of the 175th anniversary of the great Kazakh poet, Abai Kunanbaev.

The event, to be held on October 8 at 11am ET, will celebrate Abai’s writing through readings and musical renditions of his work in Kazakh and in translation. Proceedings will be moderated in English, but participants may read in ANY language. If you wish to participate, please provide the following information by no later than September 10:
