Lang. Training/Podcast: Зелёная лампа (The Green Lamp)

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1388695347

The host of this podcast is a PhD in Russian literature, a school literature teacher from Saint Petersburg with 40 years of experience. In every episode a professional actor reads a short story, followed and/or preceded by a discussion where the host helps listeners to analyze and understand the story.
The entire podcast is in Russian, although the works selected by the teacher are not necessarily written by Russian authors. The show makes an emphasis on finding links between Russian and foreign literature and overall seems to have somewhat of a globalist slant: it is produced collaboratively by a Russian/Ukrainian/American team.
The show is professionally produced and is a good opportunity for Russian learners to hear a pure, rich Russian language while enjoying a quality discussion of familiar works.

Study Abroad/Internship: New Borders in a Borderless Europe: Refugees, Minorities, and National Identity (GMU)

Application Deadline: October 13, 2019

The idealized vision of a united Europe is coming under assault. Migrants and refugees challenge Europe’s “open-door” policy; ethnic minorities demand equality while others seek independence; and ultra-nationalist groups and populist parties are bursting into the political mainstream.

This distinctive semester, launched in 2017, in association with Global Knowledge, LLC, equips students with a unique lens to closely examine the myriad challenges facing the vision of a united Europe. Can it remain a borderless Union, or rather, should new veiled borders be erected to keep out foreigners who do not share Europe’s religious and racial identities? How can the European Union maintain its democratic and pluralistic ethos in light of these challenges?

Study Abroad: Field Archaeology Excavation and Survey (Transylvania)

Deadline: Open until filled

Dacia (i.e. modern historical Transylvania) was, arguably, the most important frontier of the Roman Empire: its gold and silver sustained the collapsing imperial economy for two centuries. However, the “imperial idea” on the Eastern European Provincial frontier was more complex than Rome ever expected it… and it even outlasted the idea of Rome itself. Local Roman Provincial realities, born out of economic, cultural, social and political creolization, constant and dynamic negotiation of power, and shifting populations, have outlived the ideological centers that have claimed historical ownership of these regions, creating their own distinct expressions of identity.
