The American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC) and the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invite applications for a pedagogical workshop on integrating the South Caucasus into higher education classrooms.

Lang. Training: Summer Workshop (Indiana U)

The 2019 Indiana University Summer Language Workshop is accepting applications for intensive summer courses in: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Estonian, German, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, and Ukrainian, as well as 17 other languages.

* Courses run June 3 to July 26
* Russian Levels 1 and 2 run May 28 to July 26
* 2 semesters of instruction in 2 months (6-10 credits)
* Immersion options available for Russian
* Extensive cultural programming
* In-state tuition for all participants

Title VIII Domestic Fellowships of up to $6,500 and Title VIII Overseas Fellowships of up to $8,000 are available to support U.S. graduate students, area specialists, and scholars studying the languages and cultures of Eastern Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Apply by February 1, 2019.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are available to support of graduate and undergraduate students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures, in particular those considered to be of critical interest to the United States. Apply by February 3, 2019.

Grad Program: Polish/Russian Lit. and Culture (Uni Illinois Chicago)

UIC’s Department of Slavic and Baltic Languages and Literatures offers entering graduate students a vibrant intellectual environment in which to pursue innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship within the fields of Slavic studies and Polish Jewish Studies. Department faculty specialize in Modernist and Contemporary Literatures and their Cultural Contexts, Verbal and Visual Avant-gardes, Twentieth-century Philosophical Approaches to Literature, Polish Jewish culture and literatures, and comparative Polish and Yiddish Modernisms. Course offerings by faculty specializing in the fields of Polish, Russian, Lithuanian and Yiddish literatures and cultures approach literature and the arts above all as spaces of encounter –– highlighting the productive interaction among diverse cultural and linguistic traditions that characterizes the region.

The Midwest Slavic Association and The Ohio State University (OSU) Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) have announced the 2019 Midwest Slavic Conference to be held at OSU in Columbus, OH on April 5-7, 2019. Conference organizers invite proposals for panels or individual papers addressing all topics related to the theme “1989 and its Effects on Central and Eastern Europe”. Preceding this year’s conference, Dr. Dorin Uritescu (York University) will present the 22nd Annual Kenneth E. CFP: Translation Pedagogy Conf. (Hunter College)

Hunter College, CUNY will be hosting its first conference dedicated to teaching translation and interpretation on April 6-7, 2019. The conference aims to facilitate intellectual exchange and discussion on the overall role of translation and interpretation in the undergraduate and graduate education, from specific pedagogical tools to overarching questions of curriculum structure and program development. The conference will explore developing professional translation and interpretation programs, raising awareness of the importance of translation within global literacy, and developing undergraduate and graduate translation curricula. The conference seeks to bring together teaching pedagogies that contribute to increasing the visibility of translation and bridging the gap between the growing global demand for translation and interpretation and the underrepresentation of translation in the academic curriculum.

Study Abroad: Intensive Theatre in Moscow (ASU/MATS)

The University of Arizona is pleased to announce a new study abroad opportunity at the Moscow Art Theatre School (MATS), scheduled for May 11-31, 2019. The first two weeks of the program will take place in Moscow, where students will engage in rigorous coursework at MATS; the third week of the program will consist of online learning activities and writing assignments (to be completed remotely).
