The MA Degree Program in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (REECAS), administered by the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (CREECA), provides interdisciplinary area studies training for emerging professionals. The REECAS curriculum is designed to promote:
*A broad understanding of the cultural, political, economic, social, and historical factors that have shaped the development of societies in Eurasia, Russia, and Eastern and Central Europe
*Professional-level proficiency in one or more languages of Eurasia and Eastern and Central Europe
*Knowledge of methodological and analytical approaches of different disciplines that will contribute to a better understanding of the region and prepare students for conducting advanced research.

The application competition takes place once per year. For students wishing to matriculate in September 2019, the application deadline is January 2, 2019. Applications from Eurasia Foreign Area Officers (FAOs) are welcomed and encouraged.

Funding: Applicants to the MA in REECAS at UW-Madison who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply for the Foreign Language and Area Studies<https://flas.wisc.edu/> (FLAS) fellowship through CREECA. Graduate program assistantships through CREECA may also be available.

Academic Job: Visiting Prof. Ukrainian Studies (Columbia Uni.)

Visiting Professor in Ukrainian Studies, Open Rank, 2019-2020 (one semester)

Columbia University invites applications for an appointment in Ukrainian studies to be filled at the rank of assistant, associate, or full visiting professor for one semester (fall or spring) in the academic year 2019-2020. Rank commensurate with experience. Ph.D. or equivalent is required. History is the preferred area of research and teaching specialization, but literary/cultural studies and other areas will also be considered. The successful candidate will be appointed in one of the Humanities or Social Science Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and will teach two courses: a course of broad interest for upper-level undergraduates and a second course for graduate students. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to give one public lecture and to participate in the academic life of the University, including as an affiliate of the Harriman Institute.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three persons who may be asked to provide a letter of reference, a modest sample (article or book or dissertation chapter) of scholarship, and past teaching evaluations, if available. The letter of application should include a statement indicating which semester the applicant prefers to teach, a short list of possible courses which the applicant might teach, and a description of the applicant’s current research interests.

Travel: Romanian Folklore Expedition (American Friends)

An invitation to teachers, scholars, students, and other adventurers
You could spend next summer at the beach. Or you could step into another world.

A world where you discuss business plans with a professional witch in Romania, collect legends of Bronze Age cities in Russia, record Belarusian songs transplanted to Siberia, or witness the revival of traditional religions in Russia’s Altai Mountains.
American Friends of Russian Folklore sponsors folklore expeditions which need your help to document traditional cultures. Led by experienced scholars, our volunteers make pictures, recordings, interviews and videos. These go to scholarly archives to be held in trust for future generations, and our volunteers go home with an expanded view of the human family.
American Friends will arrange for participant food, lodging, transport and interpreters. Participants provide curiosity and helping hands. No special skills required. Just an open mind, and a willingness to leave the familiar behind.

The Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies (CREES) at the University of Kansas is now accepting applications for the M.A. program in Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies for Fall 2019. The KU Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies (CREES) is nationally recognized as one of the leading institutions for the study of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The two-year M.A. program offers future professionals a comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge of Russia, Ukraine, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and countries of the West Slavic (Poland, Czech Republic) and South Slavic (Balkan) regions. Students will gain advanced language skills and the ability to understand and analyze the complex events, history, and politics of the region. REES graduates have become leaders in a wide range of fields, ranging from higher education and government service to work in NGOs and the private sector. An accelerated graduate program is available for students wanting to complete their REES MA within a 12-month or 18-month period. The accelerated FASt track is open to all graduate students, but specifically designed for Foreign Area Officers (FAOs).

Funding and Internships

  • Apply for a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) at Russian Review, the renowned Russian Studies Journal, housed in CREES
  • Gain experience as a CREES/FMSO Security Analyst Intern, utilizing regional expertise and target language skills in the analysis of security related issues
  • Apply for the Bramlage and Willcoxon Scholarship, an annual fellowship of up to $4,000 for graduate students with a strong connection to Kansas
  • Study the Ukrainian language with the support of the Jarosewycz Scholarship, which awards up to $3,000 towards Ukrainian language classes
  • Apply for the George C. Jerkovich Award, for graduate students who show a strong dedication to the study of Southeast Europe and the Former Yugoslavia ($1,500 per semester)
  • Study the Russian language with the support of the Clowes Russian Language Awards
  • Inquire about Graduate Teaching Assistantships in other departments (CREES students have received graduate teaching assistantships in Slavic, Humanities, and other language departments. Additional Graduate Research Assistantships have also been available in conjunction with research grants won by REES-affiliated faculty).

Study Abroad: Alt Spring Break (American Home)

The American Home in Vladimir, Russia, is sponsoring two Alternative Spring Break (ASB) opportunities in March 2019 (information about 2018 program: www.serendipity-russia.com/edex.html). The final application deadline is December 1, 2018.

The program includes community service, homestays, excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, interaction with Russian university students who are studying English, and Russian language lessons.

 Participants do not have to speak Russian to join the program.

VLADIMIR (March 2-10): Help several community organizations, including the Youth Health and Education Center, Karl Liebnicht Orphanage, Russian Orthodox Church, Handicapped Children’s Association “Light”, Vladimir Regional Veterans’ Home and others, while interacting with Russian university students and experiencing the delight and wonder of provincial Russia.

MUROM (March 9-17): Help university students at the Murom Institute (an affiliate of Vladimir State University) to improve their English language skills; prepare audio and video materials for their English language program. During the Soviet period Murom was a closed city. Today it remains isolated from traditional tourist routes. Foreign language faculty and students are eager for contact with native English speakers.

Internship: Winter Children’s Camp (Cosmopolitan)

Educational Center “Cosmopolitan”, Novosibirsk, Russia, is pleased to announce that there are several vacancies available for their winter internship program. These will take place at the children’s camp just outside Novosibirsk, the administrative capital of Siberia and the centre of Russia. The dates of the program are January 3rd through January 12th, 2019.

These positions are open to university students. No previous teaching experience, no previous knowledge of Russian is required. Interning at our camp, students will gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession while being immersed in the Russian culture and having intensive practice in the Russian language. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the coolest festive season in Siberia with lots of exciting events, and experience all the winter fun one could dream of in just ten days.

This program will be an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession. They will be immersed in Russian culture, receive intensive practice in Russian language, and interact with real Russian people. Students will receive room and board, visa support, transportation, and formal Russian lessons during their stay. Interested students should contact the Program Director for more information, including participation fees.

Students who wish to spend more time in Russia and are still looking for internship opportunities may be interested in the Russian language study internship. Free accommodation is provided in Novosibirsk throughout the academic year. The dates are flexible and interested students should contact the Center to discuss further details.

Academic Job: Summer Russian Instructor (Indiana Uni)

Dodge Assistantships at the Zimmerli Art Museum for Graduate Study in the Department of Art History, Rutgers University, New Brunswick NJ

The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University offers Dodge Graduate Assistantships to doctoral candidates admitted to the Department of Art History who are committed to research on unofficial art of the former Soviet Union. Established in 2002 with a generous endowment from the Avenir Foundation in honor of Norton T. and Nancy Dodge, this assistantship program provides full tuition, fees, and health benefits, as well as an annual stipend for living expenses, to graduate students (known as Dodge Fellows). Travel funds for research and language study abroad, as well as for participation in conferences, are also available to Dodge Fellows by formal application.

Dodge Fellows are eligible for five years of assistantship funding. During the course of the first three years, students work 15 hours a week in the Zimmerli’s Russian and Soviet curatorial offices; the subsequent two years support dissertation research and writing without any work obligation.
