The Billington Fellowship was established in 2016 in tribute to the co-founder of the Kennan Institute, Director Emeritus of the Wilson Center, and Librarian Emeritus of Congress, James H. Billington. For this fellowship, we will consider proposed research in the fields of Russian history and culture, and preference will be given to scholars who have received their Ph.D. within the past 10 years. There is no citizenship restriction on this grant. The Billington Fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $5,000, research facilities, a research intern, and computer access. Fellows are required to be in residence at the Kennan Institute, Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. for the duration of the grant. Acad. Job: Asst. Prof. Russian Lit & Culture (Stanford)

The department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Stanford University is seeking applications for an acting assistant professor in the primary area of Russian literature and culture. The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures is part of the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages, a consortium of departments that collaborate on curricular and research initiatives.  The primary specialization is in the 20th century; candidates with training in other disciplines, other subfields or periods, and other languages, including other Slavic languages, are encouraged to apply. This position will be for one year, renewable for up to three years total. We anticipate a start date of September 1, 2021.

CFP: Edited Volume “Russian Translation in the Global Context”

Deadline: March 31, 2021

Co-editors of the edited volume “Russian Translation in the Global Context” are calling for submissions of up to 8,000 words on one of the following topics:

(a) the history of literary translation from Russian into another language (which may include the biography of one or more translators, or focus on translations of a single author’s work) – e.g. a history of Gogol’s translation into Portuguese;

(b) the reception of Russian literature in translation (over any time period between approx. 1900 and the present day) in a specific culture, ethnicity, nation, or region. (For this topic, we are particularly interested in scholarship on the non-Anglophone, non-Western reception of Russian literature, although all proposals will be considered). For example: Responses to “Mertvye dushi” in Indonesian literature.
