The Yerevan Center for International Education of the European University at Saint Petersburg (YCIE/E-Center) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as its inaugural Academic Director. The YCIE is an academic hub supporting conferences, lectures, events,  educational programs, and networking opportunities in Yerevan, Armenia. YCIE serves as a link connecting the Armenian scholarly and professional communities with those in Eurasia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and beyond. To qualify, A candidate must have at least 2-3 years of experience in academic registration. A Ph.D. In a relevant field of the humanities or social sciences is required (degree must be in hand by January, 2024). The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work well with diverse international populations. Full-time residence in Yerevan or its close environs beginning no later than June 1, 2024, and preferably earlier, will be required.

University of Pittsburgh: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of 20th-Century Russian Studies and Cinema

The University of Pittsburgh is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor of Slavic languages and literatures with expertise in historical Russian cinema. The position requires a Ph.D. in Slavic or a related field, native or near-native proficiency in English, and ACTFL Advanced High proficiency in Russian. The ideal candidate will have additional expertise in the cinematic and cultural traditions of Eastern and Central Europe as well as Eurasia, and/or experience in digital humanities; disability studies; media studies; performance studies; race, ethnicity, and migration studies; women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. The position entails teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, where undergraduate courses may involve some combination of Russian language and general-education literature, culture, and cinema courses in English.

2024 Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded summer study abroad program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to learn one of thirteen critical languages: Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, or Uzbek. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by American Councils for International Education.

The CLS Program is designed to promote rapid language gains and essential intercultural fluency in regions that are critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. CLS scholars participate in intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences in a country where the target language is spoken.

The CLS Program is open to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Some languages require one to two years of prior language study, while others accept students with no prior background in the language. CLS scholars are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future careers.

Jordan Center Undergrad and Masters Research Symposia

The NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia is inviting applications for its annual master’s research symposium and undergraduate research symposium. These symposia will bring together 20 undergraduates and 20 master’s students in separate events to present, discuss, network, and explore topics related to Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. They welcome presentation proposals from students in the USA, regardless of their academic field, who have conducted research projects or gained experiences in these regions. The symposia will include traditional research panels with 10-12 minute talks and discussion-based panels with 4-5 minute talks on various experiences related to the region. Participants will receive feedback and have the opportunity to engage with the audience. Polished presentations with slides are encouraged. Each symposium will last one day and feature keynote speakers, concluding with a networking dinner. The Jordan Center will cover travel costs and provide accommodation for accepted participants. Call for Contributions to a Special issue on Equity and Access to Higher Education: Perspectives from Central Asia

Achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in higher education is gaining global significance. However, EDI discussions in post-Soviet Central Asia are limited, focusing mainly on inclusion tied to international development and government policies for special needs students. This special issue aims to address this gap by providing a platform for scholars to explore access and EDI values’ relevance in Central Asia’s multicultural societies, which are diversifying along linguistic, economic, and cultural lines. Papers of various types and approaches are welcome, with a focus on questions such as policy understanding, barriers, opportunities, effective approaches, local vs. international conceptualizations, and the neocolonial agenda’s role.

The timeline for the preparation of this special issue is as follows: 

October 15, 2023 – 500 word abstracts should be submitted to the editors by email (aliya.kuzhabekova@nu.edu.kz and juldyz@kimep.kz). 

January 31, 2024 – drafts of invited papers should be submitted via the journal submission system with the indication that the paper is a part of the special issue. 

December, 31, 2024 – special issue will be ready for publication online.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Position at Franklin & Marshall College

Franklin & Marshall College is seeking applications for an adjunct position in the Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages. The role involves teaching two courses: Russian 102 (Elementary Russian II) and Russian 217 (Twentieth-Century Russian Literature, taught in English translation). Each course will have two 80-minute sessions per week. The teaching will be in-person starting on January 14, 2024, and the employment period extends for two weeks beyond the conclusion of the spring 2024 semester on April 24, 2024. The position rank will be either Adjunct Assistant Professor or Adjunct Instructor, dependent on qualifications, with a salary of $7000 per course. Applicants should have a minimum of an M.A. in Russian language/literature/pedagogy or a related field, with teaching experience preferred. Dmytro Shtohryn International Ukrainian Studies Conference

The Slavic Reference Service and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are hosting the Dmytro Shtohryn Ukrainian Studies Conference, now named in honor of Dr. Dmytro Shtohryn (1923 – 2019). The conference, titled “Ukrainian Studies Today: History, Memory, Representations, and Collections,” will take place from October 5-7, 2023. The working languages for the conference are English and Ukrainian, and it will be held in a hybrid format. Doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career scholars are encouraged to participate, and all interested individuals are welcome to attend.

Call for Proposals! For the 2024 REECAS Northwest Conference (ASEEES regional conference) at the University of Washington

The annual REECAS Northwest Conference, dedicated to Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies, is scheduled for April 11-13, 2024, at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. This conference serves as a gathering point for students, faculty, independent scholars, and language educators, both nationally and internationally. Proposals covering a wide range of topics within the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian regions are encouraged, spanning disciplines such as political science, history, literature, linguistics, anthropology, culture, migration studies, gender studies, LGBTQ studies, film studies, and more. Since its establishment in 1994, REECAS Northwest has become a vital interdisciplinary event for scholars and students in the Western U.S., Canada, and beyond. The University of Washington’s Ellison Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies hosts and organizes the conference, welcoming both individual paper and panel/roundtable proposals for presentation.

12th Biennial Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI) at The Ohio State University

The Hilandar Research Library (HRL), in collaboration with the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS) and the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (SEELC) at The Ohio State University, offers a biennial four-week Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI) in Columbus, Ohio. This intensive program caters to graduate students and focuses on two key areas: Manuscript Description and Access and Readings in Church Slavonic, utilizing microform materials from the HRL’s extensive collection. The curriculum includes lectures and hands-on assignments related to manuscript study and specific topics. Participants, limited to a maximum of 12, are expected to master the skills necessary to describe original Slavic manuscripts by the program’s conclusion. However, due to its rigorous nature, MSSI does not accommodate outside commitments such as teaching online courses or extensive individual research. Eligible applicants should be graduate students with a BA degree and proficiency in Cyrillic and at least one Slavic language, with preference given to those knowledgeable in Old Church Slavonic or other pre-modern Slavic languages. The HRL boasts the world’s largest collection of medieval Slavic Cyrillic texts on microform, sourced from over 100 institutions in twenty-three countries, comprising over 6,000 Cyrillic manuscripts and over 1,000 early pre-1800 printed books, spanning from the eleventh to twentieth centuries, with a notable concentration from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, predominantly East Slavic and South Slavic in origin.

Call for Presentations for the 2024 Global Studies Symposium
