Study Abroad: Society, Business, and the Arts (St. Petersburg, Russia)

Deadline for Applications: May 15, 2018

Society, Business, and the Arts
Study Abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg is Russia’s “cultural capital” – a grand city bursting with both classical and contemporary culture and art. St. Petersburg is also Russia’s “window on Europe” – a strategically placed city meant to open Russia, including the Russian economy, to Europe.

Home to many of Russia’s most noted authors, world famous museums and collections, and numerous theaters and concert halls, St. Petersburg is an excellent place to study the arts. This concentration of culture and history is also responsible for a significant part of the local economy in the form of tourism, both domestic and foreign. It also helps draw and retain an educated workforce, making the city very attractive to business. The very visible nature of the arts and business in St. Petersburg make it an excellent location in which to study each as well as their interactions together and with society at large.

Society, Business, and the Arts is hosted at St. Petersburg State University of Economics, one of Russia’s leading institutions, and located in the very heart of the city. This program offers a range of electives taught in English on culture, history, politics, economics, finance, marketing, and more. Several courses focus on the intersection of these subjects: how the economy affects the arts and the role of cultural movements within society. It includes a wide cultural excusion package and a weekend trip to Moscow. You’ll gain a wider, fuller, first-hand perspective on Russia for your future career in government, business, or academia.

CFP: Energy and Power in Russia and Eurasia (U. of Houston)

Deadline for Submissions: January 24, 2018

The Honors College at the University of Houston, in collaboration with UH Energy and the American Councils/U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship Alumni Development Fund, invites paper abstracts for a one-day interdisciplinary conference, Energy and Power in Russia and Eurasia. From the oil boom in Baku more than a century ago, to the pipelines crisscrossing Russia and Eurasia today, energy and global politics have long gone hand in hand. Enormous energy resources in the region are critical factors in how countries throughout Eurasia relate to one another and to the rest of the world. This conference seeks to explore the historical and contemporary significance of energy in Russia and Eurasia in all of its dimensions, and to consider questions relevant to its future. The goal is to create a dialogue across disciplines about the topic, and to connect academics, students and industry people with expertise and interest in the region. Professionals who work in the global energy industry centered in Houston, and who have experience with Russia and Eurasia, will be invited to attend and actively participate in the conference.

We welcome academic papers that explore the theme from different disciplinary approaches including (but not limited to) political science, technology, geology, international affairs, history, literature, and cultural studies. Post-docs, graduate students and advanced undergraduate students may apply. Please submit an application that includes the items listed below to energyconference2018@gmail.com by January 24, 2018. Applications will be reviewed and applicants notified of their acceptance status by February 1, 2018. All-day conference will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Stipends to offset travel costs will be available to participants coming from outside of Houston. Continue reading “CFP: Energy and Power in Russia and Eurasia (U. of Houston)”

CFP: CIEE Annual Conference (Barcelona, Spain)

Deadline for Submissions: February 12, 2018

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2018

Across the country and around the world, exciting new educational models are emerging in an effort to prepare students for learning and working in the digital age. Flipped classrooms, artificial intelligence, online learning, competency-based education, adaptive learning, collaborative education, phenomenon-based learning, and design thinking are a few of the innovative approaches being used in higher education.

How can we broaden and accelerate this trend, especially in international education? What new education models successfully empower students to become innovators – skilled at not just adapting to change, but leading it? True, technology continues to make the world more interconnected and intercultural relationships more accessible – but that alone doesn’t prepare students to thrive in a constantly-changing world. Today’s students must be skillful at collaborating within diverse teams, understanding and appreciating global challenges, and looking at issues from multiple angles; all qualities which study abroad supports in meaningful ways – and which may rival the importance of obtaining proficiency in one discipline.

Questions before us include:

  • How can we take experiential learning abroad to the next level – to not only inform students but to form them?
  • How can we empower our students to be leaders of innovation so they can solve complex world problems?
  • How can we ensure new student-centered models emphasize global competencies like creativity, collaboration, and adaptability?
  • How does new educational technology encourage students to focus on global challenges?
  • How can we train students to break the single-discipline approach when addressing complex problems and instead use intercultural, interdisciplinary collaboration?

As a community of international educators, let us innovate and create the experiential learning models that empower students to change the world. Continue reading “CFP: CIEE Annual Conference (Barcelona, Spain)”
